Ariana Grande, the superstar who revived the trend of wearing cat ears, inspiring many Arianators to follow suit, is allergic to cats. On October 19, 2010, the 7 Rings singer allegedly announced her cat allergy on her X (formerly Twitter) handle, saying:

"I'm allergic to cats... couldn't resist though <3"

Despite Grande's allergy to cats, it's evident that the singer-songwriter loves feline animals, reflected in her constant head-gear, worn not only in public but also on tours and in the music video of Love Me Harder. Earlier in 2024, when she released her seventh studio album, Eternal Sunshine, Grande even played Cat Woman across Penn Badgley in one of the tracks.

Another singer-songwriter who shares the cat allergy with Ariana Grande is Demi Lovato, who first found out about it when she adopted a new kitten in 2016.

Ariana Grande had to cancel a show in 2019 due to a tomato allergy

It turns out cats aren't the only thing Ariana Grande is allergic to. The singer-songwriter also has food allergies, much like an estimated 32 million Americans, as the US magazine reports.

In May 2019, when the Positions singer was traveling for the accompanying tour of her fourth and fifth studio albums - Sweetener and Thank U, Next - she faced an unexpected illness due to which her team had to cancel two shows in Tampa and Orlando.

Although Grande's sudden illness left the crowd of Arianators worrying about the singer's health, she took to her X (formerly Twitter) handle soon afterward to share the reason behind the cancellation of her shows, allegedly revealing that she had developed a strange allergy. The since-deleted tweet read:

"We discovered... that... i had an unfortunate allergic reaction to tomatoes and my throat pretty much closed. stilll feels like i'm swallowing a cactus but slowly making progress! thank u all for your love and understanding. can't wait to get back to performing and to make it up to Tampa and Orlando in November."

The two-time Grammy winner further wrote:

"p.s. there is NOTHING MORE UNFAIR THAN AN ITALIAN WOMAN DEVELOPING AN ALLERGY TO TOMATOES IN HER MID TWENTIES..."

The canceled shows from May 28 and 30 - whose tickets had all sold out - were later postponed to November 24 and 25.

While Ariana Grande's fans were relieved to hear that she was doing well, the news of her catching a food allergy in her mid-twenties created quite an uproar online. When Billboard approached Katie Marks-Cogan, a certified allergist, to talk about it, Cogan revealed that it was normal to develop an allergy to certain foods later in life.

She said these sudden allergies are caused by environmental or hormonal factors or a condition called Pollen Food Syndrome. It is a condition where your immune system confuses the protein of fruits and vegetables with the pollen from trees and grasses. Cogan further explained:

"So, when you eat a tomato, the immune cells in your mouth think, 'Oh, this is grass pollen.' And because they're trying to protect you from grass pollen that you may be allergic to, they release histamine to fight it off."

The release of histamine leads to localized swelling and itching in the throat, mouth, and tongue, which is what Ariana Grande described going through as she suffered from tomato allergy.

Other food allergies that Ariana Grande has

While Ariana Grande's allergy to cats and tomatoes is quite popular, the singer has other allergies as well. In 2020, the US magazine reported that Grande was also allergic to some medications, shellfish, and bananas.

According to Metro, the singer-songwriter allegedly revealed her banana allergy on her X (formerly Twitter) handle back in 2011, writing in the since-deleted tweet:

"I just discovered that I'm allergic to bananas. How bizarre is that?? Haha... are any of you allergic to bananas too? #NoBananaClub xoxoxo"

Beyond Ariana Grande, allergies run wild among other celebrities as well. According to J-14, Miley Cyrus has a gluten and lactose allergy, while Harry Styles is allergic to marshmallows. Hillary Duff is allergic to scallops, Sabrina Carpenter is allergic to apples, Justin Bieber is allergic to gluten, and so is Halsey. The list goes on and on, just to highlight how stars also share the same health tribulations as normal people.
