Ariana Grande, the singer-songwriter who was raised Italian by her mother, Joan Grande, turned vegan when she was 20. Food Network reported that the singer-songwriter went vegan in 2013.
A year after Grande adopted the vegan lifestyle, she was asked about the reason behind her choice of converting to veganism in a Mirror interview on December 5, 2014. Responding to the question, the 7 Rings singer said:
"I love animals more than I love most people, not kidding."
According to Food Network, Grande has been a prominent activist in the vegan community ever since she made the shift.
Ariana Grande admitted to being "raised on meat and cheese"
In her 2014 Mirror interview, Ariana Grande elaborated on the reason behind her decision to go vegan, saying:
"I am a firm believer in eating a full plant-based, whole food diet that can expand your life length and make you an all-round happier person."
The Thank U, Next singer then opened up about how being a vegan made it "tricky" for her to dine out, to deal with which she preferred to stick to fruits, veggies, and salads when outdoors, and would supplement it with something else when she got home.
When asked in the interview how Grande stayed in tune with her part-Italian roots, she answered saying that listening to her mother's stories was the major part of it. Being vegan, she no longer ate a majority of the Italian cuisine, further saying:
"I was raised on meat and cheese, so I’ve had enough for anyone’s normal life span."
Ariana Grande also talked about why people should avoid cow milk in her interview with V magazine, saying:
"In America, almost everybody thinks you need to have meat for protein. Protein, protein, protein! And what's in dairy? Calcium, calcium, calcium."
She further said:
"It's those kinds of proteins that latch onto the insides of your blood- stream and make it easier for you to have a heart attack. Look, cows produce milk with nutrients for cows. Maybe that's why Americans end up looking like cows!"
Ariana Grande's visible weight loss in 2023 got fans concerned
In the beginning of 2023, when Ariana Grande was filming for Wicked, the singer-actress appeared to have lost a significant amount of weight.
Marca Lifestyle reported in March 2023 that we can't be friends singer had taken her vegan lifestyle to an extreme, with her diet consisting only of smoothies, kale, tofu, broccoli, nuts, and seeds.
Amidst the rising concerns surrounding Grande's weight loss, the 30-year-old decided to address them all in a TikTok video the uploaded in April. Ariana Grande said:
"I don't do this often. I don't like it, I'm not good at it. But I just wanted to address your concerns about my body and talk a little bit about what it means to be a person with a body, and to be seen and to be paid such close attention to."
Grande then talked about how people were comparing her current body to the one she considered "the unhealthiest version" of her body. It was from a time when she had been taking "a lot of antidepressants," and also drinking frequently and "eating poorly," and at the "lowest point" of her life".
Noting that even though some of these concerns were seemingly well-intentioned, it still wasn't easy to deal with, further saying:
"I think we should be gentler and less comfortable commenting on people's bodies — no matter what"
Ariana Grande then pointed out how there were many different ways to "look healthy and beautiful," adding:
"Healthy, unhealthy, big, small, this, that... We just shouldn't. We should really work towards not doing that as much."
Grande has since released her seventh studio album, Eternal Sunshine, in March 2024— which peaked on the Billboard 200 album chart soon after its release— with the first two singles topping the Billboard Hot 100 list.
Having broken the record of the woman with the most Hot-100 number-one debuts, the Grammy winner now awaits the release of Wicked's first part, which is scheduled to release on November 22, 2024
