Chappell Roan is the breakout artist of 2024, and her seemingly overnight success is credited just as much to her avant-garde fashion sense as her music. With drag-inspired makeup, bright, glittery costumes, and shiny cowboy boots, Roan knows how to capture the attention of her crowd even without the music.
With every single one of her looks completely distinct from the previous one, the Pink Pony Club singer has her fans guessing if she's wearing wigs for every performance.
Sometime around last year, Chappell Roan dyed her hair red, which compliment her regular as well as on-stage looks.
Chappell Roan had brown hair before 2023
Before Chappell Roan decided to dye them red, the singer-songwriter had brown hair. George Papanikolas, a celebrity hair colorist, describes Roan's new hair color as burgundy with darker tones, adding:
"It's deep, sultry shade that perfectly balances the richness of red with dark, wine-like undertones. The color is bold yet elegant, with a glossy finish that adds depth and shine."
Despite the color of her hair, the Red Wine Supernova singer has always had large ringlets as curls, which further enhance her chalky-white makeup. While her own hair goes very well with most of Chappell's on-stage ensembles, the singer doesn't shy away from a wig to achieve a certain look, like her Black Swan get-up on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.
The singer-songwriter wore a shiny black feathered dress with a voluminous light blonde curly wig. Roan also ditched her regular chalky white makeup for a much subtler shade, covered with a snow queen sheen, bleached brows, and white feathers stuck to the corners of her lids.
A red shadow marked her underlashes in contrast. Roan's original lashes were covered with a white mascara, while an antique gold lipstick stained her lips, to complete a bird-of-prey visual effect.
Roan's nail extensions were also done to complete her bird-like appearance. Extra long white stiletto extensions covered her original nails and were painted in pale undertones of Arctic and Buttercup Jelly. Thin, string-like white feathers were attached to the nails to complement the feathers around her eyes.
For the show, Chappell's makeup was handled by Andrew Dahlin, while Juan Alvear took care of her nails, and Dome Forletta was her hairstylist.
Roan revealed the inspiration behind her outfits on Jimmy Fallon's show
As Chappell Roan joined Jimmy Fallon on his show, the host began the conversation by congratulating the singer for her success by saying,
"Your career is currently exploding right now. Uh, everyone's talking about Chappell Roan."
Fallon then complimented the After Midnight singer for her sense of style, asking further what inspired her outfits. To this, Roan responded:
"Well, my stylist Genesis Webb and I pull from drag, we pull from horror movies, we pull from burlesque, we pull from theater. I love looking pretty and scary. Or, like, pretty and tacky. Or just not pretty. I love that too."
The two also went on to discuss how Chappell Roan fans on the internet often insinuated deeper meanings in Roan's get-up on the stage. While some of them actually had a backstory—for instance, her Statue of Liberty get-up at the Governors Ball—most of them didn't involve any serious thoughts behind their creation.
Speaking about it, Roan explained:
"I love that fans find such deep meanings to things and I'm just like, 'I don't know, I thought I looked hot.' Like, I don't know if it's anything more than that."
Later on the show, Chappell Roan changed into a White Swan look for her live performance of Good Luck, Babe! with a white, feathering headgear, a frilled white short dress, and knee-high white boots.
The 26-year-old can be seen in several avant-garde looks as she headlines her ongoing tour—The Midwest Princess Tour.
