Pras Michel was supposed to go on tour with the rest of his Fugees co-members, including Ms. Lauryn Hill, across the US and Canada as part of their tour to celebrate Hill's debut album. However, the tour was canceled on August 7, 2024, due to poor ticket sales.
Soon after the cancelation of the tour, Michel released a track called Bar Mitzfa on August 14, 2024, which contains the following lyrics:
"Don’t blame me, blame her, she made the mess/ Not another f***ing penny, is what I told ‘Clef/ Trotting the globe with the bros, playing dominoes."
The lyrics have led to speculation in the news media that the song is a diss track aimed at Ms. Lauryn Hill. However, the rapper has come forward to dismiss said speculation, stating in an exclusive interview with Vulture published on August 21, 2024, that it "is not a diss track."
"I want to preface this by saying it’s not a diss track. You’re family, you have internal disagreements, but it’s not going to be on a level where I’m dissing her — that doesn’t make any sense. Artistically speaking, sometimes we say things because that’s how we express ourselves."
Pras Michel continued:
"This track is me speaking my truth. When I was writing the record, those lines just came out. That was actually the last bars that came: “Don’t blame me, blame her, she made the mess.” It sounded hot! I needed something to rhyme with mess, and I was like, Damn, do I put Wyclef in this?"
More on Pras Michel's reaction to the tour cancellation
Earlier in the interview, Pras Michel elaborated on how he felt after the tour was canceled, stating:
"Everyone’s frustration has been building up. This is not something that just happened overnight. My frustration was for the fans. They are paying their hard-earned money to see you...We’re going on almost three decades of our existence, individually and as a group. To have people still interested in wanting to come see you, man, you have to be grateful."
While the North America tour has been canceled, the Europe tour for Ms. Lauryn Hill and the Fugees is still ongoing. However, it is not certain that Pras Michel will be able to perform in Europe. The rapper is currently fighting ten counts of conspiracy and acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government.
Michel has accused his former defense lawyer of being incompetent, using untested AI software to document his defense. He is currently in the process of fighting said charges with a new defense lawyer. The rapper is restricted from leaving the US without approval from the court.
