Miley Cyrus' latest track from the upcoming movie The Last Showgirl was not shortlisted for an Oscar and social media users had a lot to say. Cyrus' track Beautiful That Way was officially made available for streaming on Monday, December 9 after the song bagged a 2025 Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song earlier that day.
The song plays towards the end of the upcoming Gia Coppola movie starring Pamela Anderson. However, Beautiful That Way was nowhere to be seen when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) released a 15-song shortlist for the 2025 Best Original Song Academy Award on Tuesday, December 17.
The 15-track shortlist will be cut down to 5 once the Oscar nominations are announced on January 17, 2025.
Some social media users still held out hope for Miley Cyrus' track to be nominated for the 2026 Oscars as they felt that the track was snubbed due to the movie's release being set for next year. One X (formerly known as Twitter) user who went by @DEM_Mustangs16 inquired:
"It’s because it hasn’t been officially released right?"
Similar reactions followed as social media users hoped that Cyrus was snubbed due to the film and song's release date. Here are a few X reactions to the news:
"Or it’s for next year?? Since the movie is for 2025?" asked one X user.
"It's still going to happen!" hoped another user.
"Or it’s for next year?? Since the movie is for 2025?" asked yet another netizen.
"Other songs didn’t make it on the shortlists in the past, yet they got nominated at the Oscars. This is not a snub YET," hoped one social media user.
Miley Cyrus fans were incredibly saddened by the Flowers hitmaker's name not appearing on the shortlist.
"We lost an oscar nomination just like that....." said one dejected fan.
"but my fellow miley stans tried to convince me it's gonna win an Oscar a few days ago?? 😭😭," revealed another fan.
"the oscars you are NOTHING," hit back yet another fan.
Miley Cyrus bagged her first Golden Globe nomination in over 15 years
Despite not making the Oscar shortlist, fans of Miley Cyrus had something to smile about courtesy of her Golden Globe nomination on Monday, December 9 for the very same track, Beautiful That Way. This is Cyrus' first Golden Globe nomination in over 15 years.
The singer last received a Best Original Song Golden Globe nomination during the 2009 iteration of the Awards. She received the nomination for the track, I Thought I Lost You from the 2008 animated hit Bolt, in which the singer herself starred alongside John Travolta.
Following her nomination, Miley released the track to stream via YouTube and shared an Instagram post expressing her gratitude. The singer captioned her post:
"It’s an honor to be nominated for Best Original Song alongside my friends and collaborators Andrew Wyatt and Lykke Li at the Golden Globes & Critics Choice Awards."
She added:
"Pamela is graciously sharing her moment with us. I am continuing to root for her, it’s so fun to watch her shine. Thank you Gia Coppola for inviting me to be a part of your gem “The Last Showgirl.”"
Miley Cyrus has not responded to the Academy Awards situation yet. Meanwhile, Gia Coppola's The Last Showgirl is all set for a January 10, 2025 release in the United States.
