Jack White released a new album, No Name, on July 19, 2024, exclusively via Third Man Record's retail chain. The album was available for just one day and was given away at each label's stores in London, Nashville, Detroit, and London.
Subsequent to the release, the musician and his label have urged fans to rip the album through an Instagram Live post. This was followed by the singer's official Reddit amplifying the message.
Ripping refers to the process of copying data from a CD or DVD data disk to a computer hard drive. A ripped album copy is available via the avoid-embedded official Reddit thread.
More on Jack White's No Name album
Jack White's No Name album has a total of sixteen tracks, divided into two sides titled Heaven and Hell and Black and Blue, respectively. No information has been released as to whether or not the album will receive full release. The album is the singer's first new album since 2022, Entering Heaven Alive.
In addition to the physical records sold for a day and the encouragement to rip the album and post it online, Detroit's radio station WDET 101.9 FM has broadcasted the new album in full and uploaded it to their official YouTube page.
Jack White is known for his physical vinyl releases, having continued releasing his solo records as well as his band White Stripe's records on vinyl during the vinyl decline in the late 80s to the 2010s.
The singer elaborated on his connection with vinyl records in an exclusive interview with Variety on July 16, 2022, stating:
“When record stores started slowly closing… You know, I think people misunderstand this about me. It’s really not about ‘old-timey stuff’ or whatever misconception people are thinking about me being anti-technology. I am pro-digital. I’m listening to digital music all the time, and we put all of our music out on digital on Third Man."
The singer continued:
But it’s the idea that the record store itself and the actual object that you hold in your hand — this is what causes communication between people in a real room. Same thing with us using Yondr bags [in which attendees are required to lock up their smartphones] at concerts. It’s not to be Old Man Yelling at Clouds."
Jack White drew a connection between live music and physical records that connect music lovers, stating:
"It’s to be giving people an experience where they communicate with one another. And you’re finding people talking between bands, like, ‘Oh, hey, have you got this one record? Oh yeah, if you like that, you should check this other band out.’ "
The singer added:
"Those are the kinds of conversations that only happen at record stores and at music performances, where you have these talks and you get turned on and inspired by other people. And yeah, a lot comes with that —there’s record store snobbery, and there’s audiophile (elitism). Whatever, whatever. But at the end of the day, this object causes a lot of people to inspire one another."
Jack White started the Third Man Records label in collaboration with Ben Swank. The label opened its vinyl pressing plant in 2017 and expanded it to include mastering in 2019. The label has published works by Billie Eilish, Metallica and others on vinyl.
