Allen told People in a 2021 interview that despite planning a whole introduction bit for Alexis, all he could manage upon meeting her was a shy "hi." However, before leaving the party, the former DWTS contestant managed to find her phone and saved his number in it, catching Gale off-guard. She was a nursing student at the time and was soon to graduate.

The news of their separation came alongside the announcement of Gale's third pregnancy, with Allen continuing:
"As we navigate this life change, we can also share that we will be welcoming another child together later this year."
