Looking back on Rich Homie Quan's biggest hits in wake of rappers passing

Dequantes Devontay Lamar, an Atlanta-based rapper who went by the stage name of Rich Homie Quan or Quan, passed away on September 5, 2024. The 34-year-old rapper's cause of death is still unclear and currently under investigation.

Quan’s family have shared their first media statement regarding the rapper's passing in which they honor his memory and legacy by acknowledging that Lamar's music and contribution to hip-hop will always remain widely recognized.

Quan's family issued a public statement to the people, hip-hop community, and fans on Monday, September 9, 2024. They appreciated and acknowledged the love and support they've received over the past week.

“While he leaves us with an undeniable hole in our hearts, we are comforted by knowing his music and triumphant spirit lives on. Quan’s legacy will forever be cemented as a soundtrack to our lives. And for this, we are grateful. Celebration of life details will be shared soon," Rich Homie Quan's family statement read.

Quan's father, Corey Lamar, spoke to the Kollege Kidd podcast highlighting how they intend to make Dequantes' funeral "open to the public" in Atlanta. Corey explains his wish to make the funeral a grand occasion that celebrates Rich Homie Quan's life and legacy.

"I know it would be a disservice to not allow so many of the people that he touched to come to the funeral, to pay their respects to my son. So that's why I said I want it to be a grand occasion. Like me being old school I always try to rush the process, probably to, hopefully, start the healing process for the family" - Corey Lamar stated.

Dequantes Devontay Lamar, better known as Rich Homie Quan, was a rapper who contributed heavily to the budding growth of trap and hip-hop culture in Atlanta, in the early 2010s.

Quan had his first major commercial breakthrough hit in 2013 with a record titled Type of Way, which elevated his status and audience to the likes of fellow ATL rappers Future and Young Thug.

Lamar's music aesthetic and style was praised for its melodic flows, upbeat production, and playful rhyme schemes. These factors contributed heavily to the massive audience the rapper would garner further along his career, with records like Flex (ooh, ohh, ohh) sitting at almost 326 million streams on Spotify.

His close association and frequent collaborations with Young Thug led to the formation of the popular hip-hop collective known as "Rich Gang," along with Birdman, CEO of Young Money Entertainment, Cash Money, and Republic Records.

The collective included rappers like Robb Banks, Mystikal, and various other artists under the Cash Money Record roster. The group dropped their self-titled debut studio album on July 23, 2013, which later went on debut at No. 9 on Billboard's album charts after selling over 20,000 copies in the United States in its first week.

1) Type of Way

On August 22, 2013, Rich Homie Quan released Type of Way which instantly brought the young Atlanta star massive commercial success with the track peaking at No. 50 on Billboard's Hot 100 charts. The record has brought in over a 100 million streams on Spotify to date.

The track was included in Quan's Still Goin In: Reloaded mixtape and was produced by Yung Carter. The rapper's Type of Way was used as the "track of the season" for the Michigan State football team's 2014 Rose Bowl victory.

Almost a year and a half after Type of Way brought Quan massive amounts of success and commercial playtime, the rapper delivered a trap record titled Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh), whose production was credited to Nitti and DJ Spinz.

This was the first solo single fans received after several features and collaborations with underground and established artists like Young Thug. The record became Quan's highest charting single for 2015, with Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh) peaking at No. 27 on Billboard's Hot 100 charts.

Not long after Rich Gang's self-titled debut studio album dropped, the collective released a fresh new single titled Lifestyle (Feat. Rich Homie Quan and Young Thug) on June 5, 2014.

The production on the trap instrumental is extremely bouncy and was credited to London on da Track and Arsenio Archer. The track garnered significant attention for Quan's vocal performance and rhyme schemes, which blended well with Young Thug's viral hook.

"I've done did a lot of shit just to live this here lifestyle (Style) / We came straight from the bottom to the top, my lifestyle / N---a livin' life like a beginner and this is only beginnin' (Beginnin', lil' n---a) / I'm on the top of the mountain, puffin' on clouds and n----s still beginnin'" - The hook on 'Lifestyle'.

4) To Be Worried

Rich Homie Quan teamed up with producers Haze, Zuus, and Leor Shevah, to deliver a fresh single titled To Be Worried on May 17, 2021.

Thematically the track appears to revolve around the rapper's wealthy lifestyle contributing to his nonchalant attitude toward life. The record is well structured and expresses personal instances from his career that cohesively build on a single theme throughout To Be Worried's runtime.

5) Heart Cold

Rich Homie Quan dropped his eighth career mixtape titled Back To The Basics on April 14, 2017. The tape was delivered to all major streaming platforms via RAIS LLC, under an exclusive license to Motown Records and UMG Recordings Inc.

Included on the 11-record tracklist was a single titled Heart Cold which was produced by Izze The Producer. The track is filled with hard-hitting bars, balanced flows, and a memorable hook, which finds Quan delivering lines like:

"Heart cold, ice box / Eyes closed, lights out / Chicago White Sox / Talk hard, pipe down / Shootin' s--t, head target / Dead friend, red carpet / I can't hear you n---a money anyway, say it louder / Talk loud, nah, n---a / Money in the wall with a tracker on the phone just in case you wanna call a n---a"

The Atlanta Police Department released new details from their investigation into Rich Homie Quan's passing. They include instances from the morning when the rapper was found “not alert, conscious, or breathing."

The responding officer on the scene also seemingly reported that there were no signs of foul play at the time of arrival. Although an autopsy was conducted on September 6, 2024, the cause of death is yet to be determined with further test results still pending.
