Zendaya, the American actress and singer, was recently asked about releasing music and in response, she teased that when the "right timing" comes, she may bring out something.
On Friday, April 26, 2024, the 27-year-old made an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show. When the host stated that the actress was "so gifted, you’re musical, you write music, you sing… you dance! Oh my goodness. Where did the music come from?" the Euphoria star replied:
"You know, I think if the right timing and it came, because I like creating it for myself, but if there was a moment, maybe I would, you know, put out a little something. Don’t get crazy! We’ll see, but maybe one day."
The Dune: Part Two star also talked about her surprise performance with Labrinth at Coachella last year and mentioned that she had stage fright as a child.
Zendaya says music is "special to me," teases that one day she may release new songs
Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman, known professionally by the first name, has been appearing on interviews and television shows for the promotion of her new movie, Challengers, where she plays the role of Tashi, a tennis player turned coach.
One of her promotions included a sit-down with the actress and singer Jennifer Hudson on the latter's show. When the host complimented Zendaya about her career as a singer and asked about her thoughts on music, she replied:
"I love music and it’s something that’s been special to me and being in the music industry… it didn’t kill the joy of music, but when you put music and business together it cannot feel so good."
The Dune actress, however, did say that new music was a possibility.
Zendaya has not released her own music in more than a decade. She released her debut album in 2013, with her name as the title. It remains the only full-length record made by her so far. The electro-pop collection featured the single Replay, the track that topped out at No. 40 on the Billboard Hot 100, at the time.
The model's last music project was when she featured on Bobby Brackins’ 2015 single, My Jam, alongside Jeremih.
During the interview, Zendaya also talked about joining Labrinth on stage at Coachella in 2023. She praised the English rapper, saying he was “so talented” and such a “wonderful person.”
However, when she was approached with the idea, at first, she refused because she had “bad memories” of performing as a kid and stage fright was a serious concern. She added:
"I was like, ‘I can’t! I can’t do it! It drives me crazy! I’m too nervous. I don’t wanna not do good and I don’t wanna let people down. And then I went to myself, ‘Dude, you can’t run from this. You can’t hide from this forever. You’re gonna want to be on a stage and perform live once in your life at least.’"
Zendaya explained that she ultimately agreed and joined Labrinth for the final two songs of his set, I’m Tired and All For Us.
The actress pointed out that she was initially disappointed in her performance and how she could not hear the music over the audience noise. However, later she decided to not criticize herself as the noise only meant the crowd was enjoying themselves.
Challengers was released in theaters and IMAX in the United States and Canada by Amazon MGM Studios on April 26, 2024. The movie stars several other artists including, Mike Faist, Josh O'Connor, Faith Fay, Hailey Gates, Jordan Thompson, and more.
