Mayhem released their latest studio album back in 2019. Titled Daemon, the album was released on October 25, 2019, via Century Media and became moderately successful after its release in the charts. The album charted at the 8th spot on the Finnish album chart and the 32nd spot on the Swedish album chart.

Mayhem member Teloch elaborated on the album and its title in an exclusive interview with Invisible Oranges on October 24, 2019, stating in response to how the title of the album was selected:

"Teloch: Well the process for the name actually went a long way back. There were so many different alternatives and nobody could agree on any of the suggestions we had. Eventually Daemon was the only one that everyone liked and it’s also very tied up with the graphics of the album along with some of the lyrics. So it worked out."

Teloch later added that the goal was to make a simple album:

"It was planned to make a more simple album. That was our main goal for the whole album was to simplify everything that we did. So every time we came up with something technical we just ditched it actually, trashed it. So the whole process was simplify, simplify, simplify everything..."

The album was followed by a new EP titled Atavistic Black Disorder / Kommando on July 9, 2021. The EP tracklist comprised two cover songs and outtakes from the Daemon sessions.
