On Wednesday, January 15, 2025, Canadian rapper Drake filed a new defamation lawsuit against Universal Music Group. According to Billboard, this suit happened after the rapper withdrew another filing against UMG and Spotify for allegedly using unfair means to boost the reach for Kendrick Lamar's songs.
The new lawsuit didn't just mentioned the companies, but also named several creators including Kai Cenat, NoLifeShaq, and others. According to the filing, UMG allowed them to get the reactions to Lamar's Not Like Us monitized without executing copyright strikes.
The news was tweeted by @FearedBuck on X, on January 15, to which NoLifeShaq reacted. The YouTuber wrote:
"WTF Drake ain’t no way you snitching on me bro 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂."
He further shared a 10-minute YouTube video, labeled "DRAKE SNITCHED ON ME." On January 16, he joked about Drizzy's lawsuit and shared a tweet that read:
"I’m suing for defamation 😂"
In the YouTube video, the YouTuber first expressed shock that he was even mentioned in such a suit. He then said that they were just "having fun." Elsewhere in the video, NoLifeShaq described the rapper as the "softest." The YouTuber further continued stating:
"You a great artist, I give you that all day long, I promise you. I can't take that from you. But bro you got to be the softest n*gga in the history of earth."
NoLifeShaq then mentioned in the video that creators were anyway going to react to the beef since it was sensational. He also called out the elements of the lawsuit to have "no sense."
Drake further claimed in the suit that due to lack of enforcement, both creators and the label gained profits by spreading misinformation about him.
Drake blamed song lyrics being the primary reason behind the shooting at his residence in May 2024
In the latest filing, Drake mentioned that Kendrick Lamar's lyrics included elements where he was called a "certified p*dophile" and "predator." He also was offended after his Toronto house was portrayed with "icons that are known to be used by law enforcement to identify child s*x offenders' residences online."
The Canadian rapper further claimed that the shooting that happened at his place on May 7, 2024, was particularly due to these lyrics. According to Drake, the lyrics led to violence at his home, including two more break-in attempts after the shooting.
As per the lawsuit, the violence was directly related to Kendrick Lamar's Not Like Us, released on May 4, 2024. As reported by Baller Alert, UMG reacted to the new lawsuit by calling it "frivolous" and "illogical." UMG further believed that the rapper was attempting to "weaponize the legal process" to restrict Lamar's creative freedom.
For the previous lawsuit, which Drizzy later withdrew, Spotify, too, denied the allegations made against them. Talking about the allegations against Spotify and UMG in the last suit, Drizzy later clarified that he recovered receipts that indicated bots were used to boost Lamar's tracks only to gain a minimum of 30 million additional streams for the record.
