Singer Billie Eilish dropped the music video for her single Birds of a Feather from her latest album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, on Friday, September 27, 2024. The visuals for the ballad show Eilish in an empty office being pushed and pulled across the space by an invisible force.
As news of the music video spread, internet users were quick to share their criticisms. One disappointed fan wrote:
"all the album budget went into tiktok and spotify autoplay."
Many called it the "worst music video," which did not do the song justice. Here are some comments seen on X:
"This is like the worst music video I’ve seen in years at least give a good song proper justice," one user commented.
"A fun romantic summer song and you sitting in a office spinning..." another quipped.
"Me in my office chairs ,when no one is around.." @soorajks93 joked.
Others questioned the criticisms against the mv, remarking that the naysayers did not understand what the song was actually about.
"this song is NOT romantic pls look up the meaning omg why is nobody getting why the mv is the way it is," an exasperated fan commented.
"this video is hard asf why are people hating," another questioned.
"The symbolism is so cool. Like something invisible (the aftereffects of a failed relationship/or a current toxic one) are pulling her and dragging her through walls (causing harm) but she's smiling (cuz she loves them and doesn't think anything is wrong)I love this," another user explained.
Billie Eilish said to embark on her Hit Me Hard and Soft tour beginning September 29, 2024
The music video for Billie Eilish's Birds of a Feather was directed by Aidan Zamiri, who recently directed Charli XCX's 360 and Guess videos. The latter video also featured Eilish.
As the mv progresses, the Bad Guy artist gets pulled by the invisible force, breaking through the walls, then levitates in the air, and is dragged across the floor and up a wall. All the while, the singer dons a smile and carries on singing unperturbed. She sings:
"If you go, I'm going too, uh/'Cause it was always you, alright/And if I'm turning blue, please don't save me/Nothing left to lose without my baby/Birds of a feather, we should stick together, I know/I said I'd never think I wasn't better alone/Can't change the weather, might not be forever/But if it's forever, it's even better."
The singer is set to embark on her Hit Me Hard and Soft tour beginning September 29, 2024, with shows in North America through 2024. The concerts will move to Australia in February 2025 and wrap up in Europe by July end.
On Tuesday, Billie Eilish announced that Google Maps will offer sustainable choices to fans attending her upcoming concerts. According to a September 24 article by Yahoo! Tech, throughout the tour, the app will offer tips for sustainable traveling like providing fuel-efficient routes, options to take public transportation, or even walk.
Additionally, Billie Eilish curated a list of vegan and vegetarian restaurants in ten United States cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Chicago.
Earlier this year, the nine-time Grammy winner released an eco-friendly vinyl for her latest album.
Billie Eilish has not publicly reacted to the criticism.
