Popular rapper, YNW Melly, who has been serving time in Broward County Jail for double murder is now demanding immediate release alleging inhumane treatment, isolation, and even violation of his rights.
The petition filed by YNW Melly’s lawyer, Michael Pizzi Jr., claimed that the rapper is being "illegally detained under conditions that violate the First, Fifth, Sixth, Eighth, and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution." The lawsuit filed also claimed the rapper has not been able to speak to his family members for the last three years.
Claiming that Melly has been experiencing “debilitating isolation,” the lawyers stated that the limited facilities and a huge number of restrictions have been obstructing the lawyers from meeting Melly and interacting about his case.
The lawsuit states:
"His cruel treatment by the Broward Detention authorities warrants his immediate release from pretrial detention since the detaining authorities have shown such a callous disregard for his human dignity Right to Counsel.”
It is worth noting that the rapper has been in prison since February 2019 as he was accused of murdering his two friends, Anthony Williams and Christopher Thomas Jr.
Allegedly, the incident took place in 2018, but the rapper’s case was put on trial in July 2023, where the jury could not reach a settlement and was declared a mistrial.
YNW Melly’s new trial has been scheduled for September 10, 2025
As YNW Melly’s trial was declared a mistrial in 2023, he is all set to appear before the court next year, on September 10. Talking about his case, the rapper was arrested in February 2019 for allegedly murdering two of his friends in October 2018. As per the court documents, the incident took place in October 2018.
Furthermore, the petition filed by Melly’s legal team talks about a recent incident that took place in April 2022, when an inmate alleged that Melly was trying to escape from the jail, and was planning for the same.
As a result of this, he was placed on tighter regulations with many restrictions. The lawyer also spoke about the same in the petition and said:
“These restrictions are not related to any legitimate security concerns and are instead punitive measures designed to deteriorate Melly’s mental health and impede his ability to prepare for his trial. No non-black inmates are subjected to such punitive restrictions."
It continued:
" The emotional and psychological toll of his prolonged isolation is enormous. The ongoing interference with his right to counsel is a blatant violation of his constitutional rights.”
Furthermore, this is not the first time that a motion like thiz was filed by the legal team of YNW Melly, as previously in April 2020, the management of the rapper publicly wrote on X about how the rapper had tested positive for COVID-19, due to which the lawyers had requested an early release.
However, this was denied in April 2020. Furthermore, as per Complex, the rapper also suffers from a split personality disorder, with his second personality being Melvin, who is aggressive and violent.
At the time of writing, the court have not detailed the next steps in the case, and the rapper’s management or representatives have not commented on the news.
