Rapper Eve recently disclosed that after her debut album Let There Be Eve... The Ruff Ryders First Lady was released in 1999, rapper Jay-Z allegedly gave her a call. In addition to congratulating her, he gave her advice not to get too excited because female rappers "don't really do that well."
In an interview with The Times on September 16, 2024, she opened up about a lot of incidents she faced in the industry and talked about her upcoming book Who's That Girl? which is set to release on September 17, Tuesday. She further commented on her experiences and discussed the industry's misogynistic practices throughout the interview.
The rapper then went into more detail on several points during the interview. She also said that the memoir allegedly recounted the day she released her first album.
Meanwhile, once the interview went public, netizens took to Instagram to react to it. Some supported Jay-Z and said that the incident happened a long time ago, so Eve should move on, while others wished for Jay-Z’s downfall.
Other people also supported Jay-Z and commented in favor of the male rapper.
On the other hand, other netizens supported Eve and criticized Jay-Z.
Eve talked about Jay-Z’s misogynistic call and opened up about her memoir
Rapper Eve spoke about her upcoming book, Who’s That Girl? :
“I’ve written a f*cking book. It’s crazy. I was nervous initially about putting all this stuff out there, but I wanted to be open and vulnerable.”
She went on to say that she had described several incidents from her time working in the industry in the book. She further talked about the chapter titled The Laziest Stripper at the Club, in which she wrote about her early career.
She further described the time Jay-Z called her after her debut album to congratulate her. She further tagged the comment as misogynistic.
She also discussed a s*x tape that her former partner had allegedly leaked and a mob wife reportedly offered to "make disappear”. She then continued by talking about the incident involving her DUI arrest.
Talking further about the book, the rapper also pointed out:
“There have been lots of ups and downs. [Writing] this book was a purge but it’s also about celebrating being in a good space now. I feel like I can talk about the things that happened to me in a peripheral way because it all worked out.”
The book and the interview came after Eve announced that she would be a Scholar-In-Residence at NYU this year. As per HipHopDx, the Steinhardt school's Dean Jack H. Knott expressed:
"We are thrilled to be hosting Eve as our 2024-25 Scholar in Residence.... I know our students and faculty will learn from her engagement and support of our efforts to advance equity, belonging, and innovation."
Eve also stated on Instagram on September 12:
"I am thrilled to announce I will be joining the 2024-25 Scholar-in-Residence at NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. My year-long residency kicks off September 21 with a welcoming event at NYU...."
Now, following the interview, Eve has not commented further.
