Pitchfork has stirred controversy again by rating Ice Spice's Y2K! a 7.6 out of 10, making it the highest-rated mainstream rap tape of 2024. In contrast, the site gave Eminem's The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) a 4.8 and Gunna's One of Wun a 5.7.

Now, once the rating and the review went public, people expressed disagreement over the whole thing. They then took to social media platforms like X to voice their opinion.

“This cr*p is a 7.6 but Death of slim shady is a 5 lmao OK”, said one user.
“There's no way pitchfork rated utopia 5.7 and ice spice album 7.6. They don't truly understand music”, said another user.
“Pitchfork a biggest joke”, wrote another X user.
“Pitchfork has never dropped a good rating”, commented one user.

Other netizens also said the same things.

“Utopia rating is alright but Y2K should be less than a 1”, one user pointed out.
“This rating is provocative”, said another user.
“Hiphop is officially dead if this is still the case come the end of December”, one user stated.
“The real problem is 7.6 being the highest rating for the year lol.. The ni*gaz yall listen to is horrible”, stated another X user.

Pitchfork favored Y2K! more than The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) and One of Wun

The internet recently erupted as the music reviewing site, Pitchfork, gave Ice Spice’s recent album a higher rating and better review than Eminem, Gunna, and other rappers.

For Ice Spice Y2K!, it said that the song positioned her as relatably aspirational. It went on to say that these tracks from Y2K!, except for two DayGlo singles, thump, and roil their way into pushing the boundaries smoothly.

It then urged that Ice Spice's debut album included harsh and unrepentant instrumentals that she complemented with her dynamic vocals.

Ice Spice has always been able to deliver punchline bars that make people cringe and as for her songs, their scatological rhymes are somewhat bland.

Additionally, Pitchfork did identify the lyrical flaws as the main negative in Spice's album. However, others believed Ice Spice produced the album that sounds unmatched by any of her contemporaries, veering from one musical inspiration to the next. The site then praised her for her fluid and versatile style, skillfully combining basic sounds to create unique rhythms.

For Eminem’s The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce), the site said that his flow was forced and sterile, yet dangerous and lithe. His voice shifted from a high-pitched, frenetic tenor to an ever-ratcheting snarl.

It further stated that he grew clumsy and blocky, swerving across tracks like a Cybertruck plunging into a ditch. But his defensiveness and wrath never went away.

For Gunna, it said that his last album a Gift & a Curse was very similar to his other albums and the one before that, too. The site further claimed that the rapper raps melodically about girlfriends, clothes, and whatever jewelry he happened to be wearing to the studio that day.

He has become one of the most well-known Atlanta rappers of the past ten years because of this method.

Now, once the rating and review were made public, netizens seemingly disagreed with it. They took to social media platforms to say the same and express their outrage and disappointment over the whole thing.
