Taylor Swift honored 9/11 victims during her MTV VMA (Video Music Awards) acceptance speech. On Wednesday, September 11, 2024, the singer, who had 12 nominations, kicked off the evening by winning Best Collaboration for her and Post Malone's Fortnight.
Taking the stage, she said:
"Waking up this morning in New York on September 11, I’ve just been thinking about what happened 23 years ago—everyone who lost a loved one and everyone that we lost. And that is the most important thing about today, and everything that happens tonight falls behind that."
As news of her speech went viral, Internet users quickly reacted. One expressed disbelief at the awards being hosted on the anniversary of 9/11.
Many criticized Taylor Swift for ignoring the current global political scenario and instead acknowledging something that happened over two decades ago.
"Tbh the fact that they held the VMAs on 9/11 is really a sign the country has moved on," one user remarked.
"so she can speak about world events… fascinating," @nymphaeals sarcastically wrote.
"I can't even stress how happy I am that she acknowledged this," a fan commented.
However, fans came to the Blank Space singer's defense, calling out her critics for hating her despite her efforts.
"you know people would've crucified her if she didn't mention it let's be honest," a fan commented.
"people hating as if she was the one who decided for the vmas to be on 9/11," another added.
"Why are people hating her for this I hate the world man," @shouldvesaidlou wrote.

During her acceptance speech for Best Collaboration, Swift applauded her collaborator Post Malone. The Delicate hitmaker called him "everyone in music's favorite person," adding that he is "unfailingly polite." She quipped that he took forever to stop calling her "ma'am" before passing him the microphone.
Post Malone, during his acceptance speech, called Swift "one of the kindest and most talented" people he has ever known. He expressed his gratitude to their fans and Swift, adding:
"Just the amount of work and care and love that she puts into everything she does from the music video to every—I watched her tied up to the operating table thing in the music video, and she was just directing the music video from there, and it was pretty bad*ss."
Taylor Swift won seven awards at the MTV VMAs. This included one for Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Song of the Summer. This is her fifth time winning the VMA Video of the Year, making her the artist with the most wins in the category.
