On July 22, singer and songwriter Charli XCX shared a post on X in which she wrote that Kamala Harris was a brat. The post went viral over the internet. More than a month after that, in an interview piece published by Vulture on August 26, the singer said her music had no political affiliation, despite her previous post concerning Kamala Harris indicating otherwise.
“My music is not political. Everything I do in my life feeds back into my art. Everything I say, wear, think, enjoy, it all funnels back into my art. Politics doesn’t feed my art,” said Charli XCX.
The singer also recalled the moment she wrote the post. She was in her Los Angeles home relaxing in her pool while her partner Daniel was making lunch. According to her, the post was meant to be taken as something ‘positive and light-hearted’, but not a political endorsement.
Despite this, the Vice President's campaign got boosted by ‘Welcome to Kamala HQ’ through an X account that appeared to replicate Charli XCX’s album’s neon green style. The term ‘brat’ became sensationalized because of the singer’s sixth studio album of the same name.
She later explained that the term essentially meant a girl who likes to party and can be messy occasionally. 'Brat' can also mean a person who is herself and yet has breakdowns at times. Charli XCX mentioned that someone who is 'brat' is honest, blunt, and also a little volatile.
Charli XCX did not believe that her brat post concerning Kamala Harris would be viewed 55 million times
At the time when this story was compiled, the post had already gained 55.3 million views. When asked about becoming a CNN sensation after her viral post in the aforementioned interview, she said it was important for her to be on the right side of democracy and women’s rights and that she was happy to help prevent democracy from failing further. The singer also said,
“Did I think me talking about being a messy b*tch and, like, partying and needing a Bic lighter and a pack of Marlboro Lights would end up on CNN? No.”
Kamala Harris’s association with 'brat,' as written by the English singer, was reportedly discussed on Fox News and CNN. It is important to note that Charli XCX is not an American citizen and cannot vote in the election. The sensation of ‘brat summer’ has almost faded away, but Kamala Harris’s campaign continues to use its sentiment. According to the VP’s former speechwriter Gevin Reynolds, the entire move to lean into a meme was extremely smart.
Charli XCX further stated that she has never been and would not want to be a political artist. She mentioned Bob Dylan and said she was not like him and would never pretend to be so. The interview stated that the only commonality between the singer and Kamala Harris was that they have been making people feel less miserable this year.
