Chappell Roan wasn't accepting any passive spectators during her performance at Outside Lands on Sunday, August 11. The Hot to Go artist called out the VIP section for not dancing along to her hit song.
In a video showing part of her nearly hour-long set that circulated on social media, the singer can be heard saying:
"It's so weird that VIP thinks they're so way too cool to do this! You're not fun! Be fun and try!"
Roan's calling out the VIP section received much support from her fans on social media. One fan on X commented:
"CLOCK THEIR TEA MOTHER GET THEM"
Many other netizens echoed Chappell Roan's comments, noting that the VIP section appeared to be lacking in enthusiasm.
"It's so annoying because real fans want to be there and the people in VIP are talking through the whole show and only there to post on social media that they were there," a fan on X commented.
"No bc it needed to be sad it's always people in the front row/people with VIP tickets that act like they don't even wanna be there," another X user wrote.
"OL VIP sucks extra hard—tech l*sers who legit just stand there doing nothing, no thank you pls leave," another one chimed in.
Other fans on social media pointed out that many Chappell Roan fans would have loved to be in the VIP section and would have given her energy during her performances.
"Comrade Chappell iktr. Babe, there's so many people who wish they were there. Either participate or watch on the timeline like the rest of us lolll," an X user wrote.
"Especially when she's wearing her Hot to Go fit! She's serving, you need to give her the same energy!!," another netizen wrote on X.
At one point during her performance, the Hot to Go singer-songwriter challenged the front-row seaters to join in with the dance, or she would call them onstage.
Chappell Roan's Outside Lands set drew an enormous audience despite the passive VIP section
Despite calling out the VIP section during the opening notes of Hot to Go, Chappell Roan's Outside Lands concert on Sunday still clocked a massive crowd.
Another Planet Entertainment's president of concerts and festivals, Allen Scott, mentioned to the San Francisco Chronicle that the Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess artist set was the festival's biggest. Around 50,000 of the 75,000 people who attended the festival showed up during the Missour-born musician's concert on Sunday.
During her set, the rising pop star mostly performed songs from her 2022 debut album, moving around the stage in a sequined blue and gold outfit and shiny gold boots. She delivered crisp vocals to songs like Femininomenon, Hot to Go, Casual, her unleashed track Subway, and the fan favorite Pink Pony Club. Additionally, the singer-songwriter did a couple of stunts, including splits at one point in her performance.
