Seth Binzer, a.k.a. Shifty Shellshock, the lead singer of Crazy Town, passed away on Monday, June 24, 2024, at the age of 49. The unfortunate news was confirmed by the Los Angeles Medical Examiner, who explained that he was found dead in his home.
The musician co-founded the rap-rock group Crazy Town in 1995 (then called The Brimstone Sluggers) along with Bret "Epic" Mazur. Crazy Town rose to fame with their single Butterfly (2000), which became an anthem in the early 2000s and charted at the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 for two weeks. It pushed their debut album, The Gift of Game (1999), to sell over 1.6 million units.
While the cause of death has not been released, Shifty shared cryptic posts on his Instagram just two months before his death. His final post was shared on April 29. It featured a photo of a group of people in white clothes with a white balaclava and one person in similar black attire looking at the camera. The image read, "Real is rare, fake is everywhere." Shellshock captioned the post, writing:
"To the ones who stay even when I try my hardest to scare the away."
At the time it was shared, the post had a few comments from friends and fans expressing concern.
Shifty Shellshock has struggled with substance abuse and even appeared on Sober House and Celebrity Rehab
The photo with men wearing balaclavas was not the only post Shifty Shellshock shared on April 29. Prior to his final Instagram post, he shared an image with text that read:
"The black sheep, the odd ducks, the rejects, the eccentrics, the loners, the lost and forgotten. More often than not, these people have most beautiful souls."
The musician has been vocal about his battle with substance abuse and has even appeared on two seasons of reality TV shows Sober House and Celebrity Rehab. Shifty shared a sobriety update earlier that day. He shared an image of a heart drawn on the ground along with the words "true love," with the caption:
"I'm a lover than a fighter …but the one I need to love more Instead of fight with is myself .. mr shifty true Love # Sober alive and grateful."
In a 2001 interview with Rolling Stone, the Crazy Town frontman admitted to selling and using recreational drugs and struggling with addiction. In 2012, he was arrested for battery and cocaine possession and sentenced to three years of probation.
Around the time, Shifty Shellshock was admitted to the hospital after losing consciousness and having been in a coma before being released. While there were no official reports, many speculated it was drug-related.
Seth had shared posts talking about "being yourself" and perseverance. Just a day before his final posts, the singer took to his Instagram to write:
"Thugged it out in silence & ima win the exact same way."
While comments on his posts, when originally shared, were limited, most featured fans and friends expressing their best wishes for the singer.
Shifty Shellshock also had a solo career
Despite the success of Butterfly, Crazy Town's second album, Darkhorse (2002), fell flat, and the group temporarily disbanded. Though they reformed five years later and began touring, it was not until 2014 that they released their third album, The Brimstone Sluggers, which failed to chart.
In 2017, Epic exited the band, and Shifty Shellshock renamed it Crazy Town X. When a fan on Instagram questioned his reasoning, Seth explained that "X" is "used by gangs to symbolize a territory that has just been won."
Outside of his work with Crazy Town, Shifty Shellshock also had a solo career. He worked with British producer and musician Paul Oakenfold on the latter's single, Starry Eyed Surpise. The track peaked at No. 41 on Billboard's Hot 100 and No. 6 on the UK Singles Chart.
Shellshock released his only solo album, Happy Love Sick, in 2004. It's single, Slide Along Side, was a moderate success in Europe.
Shifty Shellshock is survived by his children, Halo, Gage, and Phoenix.
