On December 12, 2024, a judge denied bail for Chicago rapper Lil Durk, despite his proposed $3.3 million bond, including $2.3 million in equity and $1 million in cash from Sony, under his contract with Alamo Records. The court deemed him too dangerous to release, as reported by Hot New Hip Hop.
The American rapper Lil Durk, whose real name is Durk Devontay Banks, was arrested and charged in connection with a murder-for-hire plot on October 25, 2024, in Florida, as per Variety.
Lil Durk remains in custody as the $3.3M bail proposal is denied
On Thursday, December 12, 2024, Lil Durk, his attorney Jonathan Brayman, and record label Sony proposed a collective bond package totalling $3.3 million to prosecutors. Chicago Tribune journalist Jason Meisner, as cited by Hot New Hip Hop, reported the details of the bond.
According to the Chicago Tribune, despite the extensive proposal, the court denied bail following a lengthy hearing attended by many of Lil Durk's relatives. In response to the decision, attorney Brayman expressed disappointment but emphasized that Mr. Banks remains confident and optimistic about the future.
"We were obviously disappointed, but will continue to fight on. Mr. Banks remains confident and optimistic about the future. He deeply appreciates the outpouring of love and support he has felt since his arrest," Brayman said.
As mentioned, Durk was arrested in October 2024. According to Forbes, the Chicago rapper has pleaded not guilty after being indicted by a grand jury on felony charges related to an alleged murder-for-hire plot against rapper Quando Rondo's cousin Saviay'a Robinson.
According to Variety, the Chicago rapper was not the only one arrested that day; five members of his Only the Family crew were also taken into custody in connection with the murder-for-hire case involving rapper Quando Rondo's cousin, Saviay'a Robinson.
The situation reportedly started on November 6, 2020, when Lil Durk's friend King Von was allegedly killed by Quando Rondo's group. In 2022, members of Only the Family reportedly sought revenge, killing Quando Rondo's cousin, Saviay'a Robinson, at a busy Los Angeles gas station, according to Variety and NPR.
According to NPR, the United States attorney for Los Angeles, Martin Estrada, explained the shooting and suggested that it happened at an open and busy intersection.
"The shooting occurred in the open, at a gas station at a busy intersection, endangering many others in the area. Violent gun crime of this sort is devastating to our community, and we will have zero-tolerance for those who perpetrate such callous acts of violence," Martin Estrada said.
As per CBS News, another case has surfaced involving Lil Durk, suggesting his alleged involvement in a separate murder-for-hire plot from 2022. The incident pertains to the killing of Stephon Mack outside the Youth Peace Center of Roseland, located at 420 W. 111th St., on January 7, 2022.
In Mack's case, a grand jury indicted two Chicago individuals, Anthony Montgomery-Wilson and Preston Powell.
The FBI reportedly linked the two individuals to Banks using text messages, confidential informants, phone records, and social media posts, including one that read, "Did Durk give you that money?" However, Lil Durk has not been formally charged in connection with this case.
The conclusion to this case has yet to be reached as the FBI and the Los Angeles Police Department continue their investigations.
According to the Department of Justice, if Banks and his five associates are convicted, they could face life sentences in prison. Currently, Lil Durk is incarcerated at the Broward County Jail in Florida.
According to Rolling Stone, Banks will appear in court for a trial on January 7, 2025.
