Nicki Minaj is currently on her fourth world tour - Pink Friday 2 Tour - from where a certain clip of hers went viral on Monday, September 30.
In the clip, Minaj was on stage with fellow rapper, BIA, accompanying her as the duo performed WHOLE LOTTA MONEY. However, for some reason, Nicki stopped mid-performance, halting the instruments and shouting the name of her DJ, Boof, five times, adding, "you're fired".
While the clip of the rapper firing her DJ spread quickly on X, it was soon declared as "misleading" by the platform's Community note, as both the rapper and the DJ denied it.
The community note read,
"This post might be misleading, as Nicki Minaj did not fire her DJ after the incident. That's just how she and DJ Booth interact as friends, joking around. She didn't mean it seriously."
This isn't the first time Nicki Minaj has threatened to fire DJ Boof
Roughly eight hours after the video was posted from the X handle of @mymixtapez, DJ Boof responded to it, calling it "fake news".
The DJ also added to it a screenshot of his Instagram story, which was uploaded after the clip went viral. In the story, Boof announced the tour's upcoming show at Kansas City. If he were no longer employed by Nicki Minaj, there would be no reason for him to do so.
Minaj also responded to the viral tweet, addressing all ongoing rumors about her - the one about firing her DJ, the one about kicking "her cameraman in the face," and lastly, about snatching "mic from security." She then highlighted how, despite the rumors, she was still most streamed and "loved in real life."
This isn't the first time Nicki Minaj has threatened to fire Boof. On Friday, September 27, one of the Barbz (fanbase of Minaj) (@KaishaSpears) tweeted a selfie with the DJ from Minaj's concert in San Diego. The rapper replied in an apparent joking way and threatened to fire Boof if it ever happened again, writing:
"Dear DJ Boof, I see you taking pics with my Barbz ever again, you gon be on the unemployment line, sir."
On May 27, the DJ - who was accompanying Nicki Minaj on her tour - was asked by a Barb to autograph her chest, which he obliged, adding a picture of the same on his Instagram handle later.
The story was then screenshotted and shared over X, by a Barb who seemed to disapprove of it. When it came to Minaj's notice, she seemingly joked and replied to the tweet, promising she would fire the DJ if he ever did such a thing again.
Boof praised Minaj's sense of humor in a 2019 interview
Considering how the rapper hasn't yet fired Boof, it appears that throwing threats at her DJ is one of Nicki Minaj's playful expressions. Five years ago, in December 2019, Boof was interviewed by Tour Tales, where he admitted to knowing Nicki for 10-12 years. The two were also both Trinidadians and raised in New York, the DJ revealed. His first show as Minaj's main DJ was in October 2023.
Talking about their friendship back then, Boof said:
"It’s always fun with her. It’s never a dull moment. It’s always jokes and laughing. She has a huge sense of humor."
He also recounted an incident where the rapper had on boxing gloves while rehearsing when started throwing jabs at me. Boof continued:
"the way she started throwing jabs at me had me like, ‘Yo, girls don’t throw jabs like that. You’re throwing jabs like a real boxer.’ Most guys when they play fight, they’re not trying to connect. She almost connected and it almost hit me (laughs)."
When asked about the craziest thing he had seen a fan do for Nicki Minaj, Boof said:
"The craziest thing I’ve seen is someone gets her face tattooed on their body. That’s a superfan (laughs). I love her to death, but I don’t think I can tattoo my favorite artist on my body."
Nicki Minaj's tour is nearing its end, with the final show set for October 11 in Elmont, New York. After the tour, she is expected to announce details about her upcoming album, Pink Friday 3.
