On September 16, 2024, Sean "Diddy" Combs, aka Puff Daddy or Puffy, was arrested on charges of "racketeering, s*x trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution", as reported by People. New details emerged during his arraignment hearing on Tuesday in Manhattan, where the music mogul was denied bail.
According to the court documents obtained by the publication, Diddy allegedly held "freak offs", in which he coerced women to engage in prolonged s*xual acts for his pleasure. The prosecutors dubbed the "freak offs" as "elaborate and produced s*x performances" orchestrated by the rapper.
During the hearing, Marc Agnifilo, Puffy's lawyer, referenced his past relationship with his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura, who sued the rapper in November 2023 for physical assault and s*xual abuse. He claimed that Ventura's lawyer had called Diddy's lawyer to tell them she had written a book and offered it to the rapper for $30 million.
He also mentioned Puffy's bail, saying:
"This is a slippery slope. The Government is going to say she [Ventura] was coerced - she had to say that to go for the $30 million. We have a serious bail package. I hope your Honor can see that Mr. Combs has done things to show that he is trustworthy."
Marc Agnifilo also claimed that Ventura, identified as "Victim 1", consensually engaged in the "freak offs" which were reportedly an extension of Diddy's long-term relationship rules with a woman.
"Is it s*x trafficking? Not if everybody wants to be there. We are not better off if the federal government comes into our bedrooms. They don’t do good there. That’s what they’re doing. They’re coming into Mr. Combs’ bedroom," he added.
Cassie Ventura's lawsuit against Diddy was settled the next day the case was filed, with the rapper denying the claims. However, a graphic video of Puffy physically assaulting Ventura at LA's InterContinental Hotel in 2016 was made public in May 2024. Following this, he issued a public apology on social media.
Prosecutors argued that Diddy's 2016 assault on Cassie Ventura was allegedly after one of the "freak offs"
According to The Daily Mail, Emily Johnson, the assistant U.S. attorney, said that the 2016 assault on Cassie Ventura allegedly happened after one of the "freak offs." The attorney claimed that Diddy bribed the hotel security "with a handful of cash in exchange for his silence."
Johnson added that the video was scrubbed from the hotel's internet servers and only resurfaced in 2024. She said that the rapper denied all allegations till he was confronted with the video, which she argued was proof that he couldn't be trusted.
Meanwhile, Marc Agnifilo argued that Combs was not guilty and had been on his way to New York to "establish his innocence" when he was arrested. The attorney vowed to help the rapper win the case, adding:
"Mr Combs is a fighter - he will fight this until the end. He is innocent. He came to New York to establish his innocence. He is not afraid - he is not afraid of the charges. He has been looking forward to clearing his name and he is going to clear his name. We believe in him whole heartedly. He didn't do these things."
The prosecution claimed that Combs built a criminal empire whose members engaged in crimes like "s*x trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, bribery and obstruction of justice." The court documents also reported that Diddy allegedly "threatened and coerced women and others around him to fulfill his sexual desires."
Police reportedly discovered three semi-automatic rifles, ammunition, and 1000 bottles of lubricant when they raided Diddy's Miami mansion on March 25, 2024. Sean Combs, who pled not guilty, was denied bail and will remain in custody. Puffy could be sentenced from 15 years up to life if found guilty.
