Mac Miller's estate has finally delivered the late rapper's highly anticipated shelved project from 2014, titled Balloonerism. The LP was released to all major streaming platforms today (January 17) via his estate under an exclusive license to Warner Records Inc.
This marks Mac's second posthumous album after his tragic passing in 2018 where he passed away at the age of 26 from an accidental overdose. Balloonerism officially follows up on 2020's Circles which debuted at No.3 on Billboard 200.
Mac's 14-track LP primarily explores themes of mental health, love, and relationships, fueled by an experimental jazz-infused production that elevates the album's listening experience.
While Mac does carry a significant portion of Balloonerism's runtime, the late rapper was supported by guest performances and collaborations from artists like Thundercat, SZA, and Ashley All Day.
With Mac Miller's Balloonerism arriving two days before what would have been his 33rd birthday, multiple media outlets across social media have begun reposting the release of his second posthumous album.
With fans and critics alike sharing their reactions to Balloonerism the album has started trending across platforms like X and Instagram. One individual was even seen quoting lyrics from a song titled Funny Papers, where Mac seemingly predicts his death to come on a Friday.

Major details about Mac Miller's second posthumous album 'Balloonerism'
The earliest references to a project titled Balloonerism can be dated back to 2014, which coincides with the release of Mac Miller's eleventh mixtape Faces. According to multiple reports, the LP was being worked on for a while before being shelved as the late rapper began to explore other projects.
In an announcement post, uploaded to Instagram a week after the official trailer for Balloonerism was released on November 21, 2024, Mac's estate recounted his journey of creating the album, stating:
"To the extent that he commissioned artwork for it and discussions concerning when it should be released were had regularly, though ultimately ‘GOOD AM’ and subsequent albums ended up taking precedence. We believe the project showcases both the breadth of his musical talents and fearlessness as an artist."
Given that it has been over a decade since this project was conceptualized, several unofficial versions of Balloonerism have been leaked online.
These leaks were first addressed by friend and audio engineer E. Dan, two years after Mac's passing, who announced that he would be completing the project and gearing it up for release.
"Pretty much all of the songs you all know as Balloonerism were made inside of a week stemming from what was basically jam sessions. He did indeed move on from it, took a few of the songs for Faces and never got back to it," E. Dan explained in a since-deleted Reddit comment.
Mac's estate would also address the leaked records in their announcement post, uploaded to social media on November 21, 2024, where they stated:
"Given that unofficial versions of the album have circulated online for years and that releasing ‘Balloonerism’ was something that Malcolm frequently expressed being important to him, we felt it most appropriate to present an official version of the project to the world.”
Mac Miller's Balloonerism was delivered to streaming platforms alongside a feature animated film, of the same name, which was distributed to all US and Non-US markets on January 15, 2025.
