On Tuesday, January 13, 2025, DJ Premier posted on Instagram about his friend and producer, Jazimoto, whose family home in Altadena was burned down amidst the LA wildfires. In his post, the DJ mentioned that Jazimoto, originally named Jasmine Rhoda Morris, also lost her computers, musical instruments, and a massive record collection at her home.
He further mentioned in caption that a piano that was gifted to Jazimoto by her late father and jazz artist, Wilbur Morris, was also destroyed in the fire.
Concluding her post, DJ Premier urged fans to donate to the GoFundMe set up for Jazimoto by a person named Quan Walker from Kingwood, Texas. The video attached to the post was taken on the street where Jazimoto's home used to be, before the Eaton fire destroyed it. Alongside the producer's home, the other houses on the street have also suffered the toll of the wildfires.
DJ Premier wrote in the caption:
"I put a GoFundMe link in my bio. Any contribution is appreciated. Extreme prayers up for everyone going through this chaos."
The "treasured possessions" that Jazimoto lost in the Eaton Canyon fire have been listed on her GoFundMe page
Quan Walker, who opened Jazimoto's GoFundMe page, claims to be her friend in the description. According to Walker, who has allegedly known Jasmine all her life, the producer's family home in Altadena was struck by the Eaton Canyon fire on the morning of January 8.
On the fundraising platform, Walker also listed down the "treasured possessions" Jasmine lost to the fire. Here are the things mentioned on the list:
- A collection of more than 3,000 records, including original music recorded for films, commercials, and collaborations.
- Music archives from years of work with artists such as Teflon, Planet Asia, and M.O.P.
- A piano gifted by her father and an electric violin gifted by her mother.
- A rare Stradivarius violin Jazimoto used for her Juilliard audition.
- MIDI and JUNO G keyboards.
- Apple computers, studio monitors, Sony headphones, and essential software like ProTools and Reason.
Toward the end, a statement given by the producer was attached that read:
"Music is the language of my soul. Losing these pieces of my life is losing part of who I am. But I am determined to rebuild and continue creating.
So far, people have donated about $5,300 to Jazimoto's GoFundMe page.
Both the Eaton and the Palisades fires are still active
While Jazimoto's home has been destroyed, the wildfire that has caused it is still active. Per AllHipHop, the Eaton fire—which is the second biggest wildfire in Los Angeles, besides the Palisades fire—was contained at 33% on Monday morning, January 13). Meanwhile, the condition of the Palisades fire is even worse; it is only 14% contained, having burned more than 23,000 acres.
The wildfires started last Tuesday and are still going strong. Per BBC, further destruction is expected across the LA counties as the weather forecast predicts incoming winds that might help fuel the flames.
Karen Bass, the mayor of LA, told BBC that "urgent preparations" have been made across the state, which is predicted to peak on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. A red flag warning has also been announced in California until Wednesday.
So far, 24 people have lost their lives to the wildfires, the Palisades and the Eaton fires in particular. Another 23 people in these fire zones are currently missing, the news outlet reported.
The raging fires haven't deterred crime, with the authorities revealing that they've made ten arrests in the fire zones - nine for looting and one for arson. If the accused are convicted, they will receive maximum sentences, said the LA District Attorney, Nathan Hochman.
The Hollywood celebrities who have lost their homes amidst the ongoing wildfires include Paris Hilton, Eugene Levy, Mel Gibson, Anthony Hopkins, Cary Elwes, Billy Crystal, and John Goodman.
