On November 5, TMZ reported that Dr. Dre filed a response to the lawsuit filed by Dr. Charles Sophy, claiming that he never made any “credible threat” of violence to the counselor, as mentioned in the lawsuit filed by the latter.
In the response, Dr. Dre accepted that he had sent angry text messages to Dr. Charles Sophy, however, he also labeled Sophy's claims as “racist.” The record producer's response stated:
“Sophy claiming he’s suffering from “emotional distress” is invoking the racist caricature that depicts Black men…as inherently violent.”
For the unversed, Dr. Sophy is Dr. Dre’s former marriage counselor, who was actively involved during the divorce procedure of the rapper and his ex-wife, Nicole Young.
The initial lawsuit filed by the marriage counselor consisted of numerous allegations against the rapper, claiming that Dr. Sophy often felt threatened by Dr. Dre, as the latter often blasted him via text messages.
Dr. Charles Sophy, who filed his lawsuit on October 9, 2024, is seeking $10 million in damages, as the lawsuit alleged:
"Rather than treating the mediation process as an opportunity for healing, Dre decided to take his frustrations about the mediation out on Dr Sophy — frustrations that manifested themselves in the form of a nearly year-long sustained campaign of late-night texts, threats of intimidation and violence, and homophobic rhetoric."
Dr. Dre, aka Andre Romell Young, married Nicole in May 1996. During their marriage, they welcomed two kids—Truice, born in 1997, and Truly, born in 2001. Their marriage lasted for more than a decade, and they finalized their divorce in 2021.
Dr. Charles Sophy helped Dr. Dre and his ex-wife with a “joint psychotherapist-patient relationship” in 2018
The couple filed for a divorce in 2018, and that is when they sought the help of Dr. Charles Sophy, for a “joint psychotherapist-patient relationship.” However, Sophy stated in his lawsuit that, time and time again, he was threatened by Andre Romell Young, who allegedly often used a burner phone to send messages like:
“What a little b*tch you are.”
Furthermore, TMZ even obtained a few screenshots which were filed with the lawsuit, which show Andre allegedly threatening the psychiatrist. In a text message sent on May 5, 2023, Dr. Dre reportedly said:
“You’re f*cking with the wrong one. What happened Doc? I thought you wanted to talk. Cat got your tongue? You’re going to give to give me a written apology. If not, I’m moving forward. I’m not playing, trust me.”
Dr. Charles Sophy even mentioned fake FBI agents showing up at his house to intimidate him, to which Dre has claimed that he has nothing to do with them.
Additionally, Sophy filed for a permanent restraining order against the rapper, alleging threat. However, that request was denied on Tuesday after a judge ruled that Sophy failed to prove that Dre poses a threat to his physical safety.
As per Billboard, Dr. Charles Sophy filed the lawsuit against Dre in October 2024, however, the psychiatrist has not yet addressed the response of the rapper, where he reportedly called Sophy a “racist.”
