Dr. Dre recently elaborated on his dissatisfaction with the hip-hop industry of late in a new interview with Snoop Dogg days after the duo's album Missionary was released on December 13, 2024. The album, which marked Snoop's 20th studio album, is said to be the follow-up to the rapper's debut album, Doggystyle, also produced by Dr. Dre in 1993.
The duo, who sat down for an interview with Complex published on December 16, spoke about their work in the music industry. Snoop Dogg revealed that Dr. Dre did not like listening to his old music and seldom listened to other artists' music, to which Dre replied:
"I don't want to be disrespectful to anybody right now, but I'm not really inspired by what's happening with hip-hop these days. It's not for me. I've always said I'm not going to disrespect it or anything like that, but I haven't heard anything that makes me go, 'F**k, why didn't I do that?' I haven't heard that in a long time, which makes my job easy, to be honest."
However, Dr. Dre praised Kendrick Lamar's work, saying his albums good kid, m.A.A.d city (2012), and To Pimp a Butterfly (2015) were the latest hip-hop albums that inspired him.
Dre and Lamar have previously collaborated, and both artists performed at the Superbowl Halftime Show in 2022. Lamar also brought Dr. Dre out for his Juneteenth popout show to perform his Drake diss track Not Like Us live for the first time.
Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg promoted Missionary with a short film
On December 13, 2024, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg released a short film on YouTube titled Missionary to promote their new album of the same name. The 12-minute short film, narrated by Method Man, portrayed the duo as superheroes who protected the most vulnerable people in the community. The short film also featured cameos from Jhené Aiko and 50 Cent.
Missionary (the album) was also released on December 13. The 16-track LP featured artists like Eminem and 50 Cent in Gunz n Smoke, and Tom Petty and Jelly Roll in the track Last Dance with Mary Jane, among other collaborations.
Snoop Dogg praised Dr. Dre for his work on Missionary in a recent Apple TV interview with Zane Lowe after the album's release. According to The Source, the rapper said that Dre's ears and brain were wired "a little bit different" than other people to help him create masterpieces.
“He [Dre] knows exactly what he wants. You may not hear it, you may not know exactly what it is or you may feel like he’s making you do unnecessary things or repetitive things. But once it’s all finished, he needs what he needs to create the masterpiece. And his ear and his brain is a little bit different than ours, so he don’t hear or see what we hear or see in the studio,” Snoop Dogg said.
The rapper also compared how he and Dre worked in the past to how their dynamic has shifted over the years due to experience. Snoop said he was in charge of writing to "paint a picture" of how he wanted the project to sound back in the day, but now Dre is doing it for him.
"You speed the clock up to now, you got him writing for me, and painting a picture for me on what I should be and what I should sound like," Snoop added.
Missionary is now available on all streaming platforms.
