In a recent interview, Lil Baby revealed how he felt when he was name-dropped in Kendrick Lamar's hit diss track Not Like Us, the penultimate song in his contentious rap beef with Drake. The song, released on May 4, 2024, saw many crown Lamar the winner of the beef after the Compton rapper accused Drake of being a p*dophile and culture vulture.
Lamar name-dropped several rappers in the third verse of Not Like Us to establish Drake as an alleged colonizer who tried to blend into the culture by hanging around Atlanta rappers. Lamar claimed that Lil Baby helped Drake up his street cred with slang with the line:
"Lil Baby helped you get your lingo up."
On the December 19 episode of The Breakfast Club's Out of Context podcast, Lil Baby revealed to host Charlemagne The God that he did not appreciate being name-dropped in Not Like Us. He continued that he wasn't into "that side of Hip-Hop", adding he didn't want "to have nothing" to do with the beef.
“I ain’t really into, like, that side of Hip-Hop. With any situation, like, if you and him was arguing, then why the hell you gonna say me? You know? […] I don’t be wanting to have nothing to do with it. Not saying whatever they got going on isn’t real or nothing, but I feel like, to me, rapping and s**t be my work. I don’t want [that]. That type of s**t ain’t work,” he said.
Netizens were left divided when this clip made rounds on social media. Some pointed out the irony of Drake name-dropping SZA and other Kendrick Lamar affiliates, with one person tweeting:
"Drake named drop SZA and many Blood members against Kendrick don’t be soft now."
Many echoed this sentiment, claiming the lyric was not personally about Lil Baby but rather an allegory that alluded to Drake being a colonizer.
"Drake also mentioned alot of rappers and funny enough Kendrick also mention gunna on euphoria but your washed a** is taking the piss," one person tweeted.
"Lil Baby isn’t that smart. The line had nothing to do with him and had everything to do with the Drake & Atlanta as a culture," another person added.
"Kendrick was just trying to make a point about how culture can be taken advantage of," someone else commented.
"Lil Baby dnt speak for alluv atl… tha majority of atl is tied of Drake bein a culture vulture an ridin our waves fr," another user wrote.
However, others seemingly agreed with the rapper, calling him "the goat."
"Respect lil baby the goat," one user posted.
"Kendrick don’t even know Lil Baby and was just saying anything. ATL rocking wit Drizzy," another commenter added.
"Damn Baby said stop being a thot and bringing my name into it, common Kendrick L," someone else tweeted.
Lil Baby was one of the many rappers name-dropped in Not Like Us
Kendrick Lamar and Drake's rap battle was one of the most talked about events in hip-hop in 2024. The beef spawned over 9 songs, two music videos, a pop-out concert and a new Kendrick Lamar album.
Both Drake and Lamar name-dropped several artists in their diss tracks, with the latter mentioning rappers like Future, Quavo and 2 Chainz in Not Like Us. Lamar claimed Drake collaborated with Atlanta rappers to exploit Black culture for profit in the track's third verse.
"You run to Atlanta when you need a check balance/ Let me break it down for you, this the real n***a challenge/ You called Future when you didn't see the club/ Lil Baby helped you get your lingo up/ 21 gave you false street cred/ Thug made you feel like you a slime in your head/ Quavo said you can be from Northside/ 2 Chainz say you good, but he lied/ You run to Atlanta when you need a few dollars/ No, you not a colleague, you a f**kin' colonizer," the third verse went.
The DJ-Mustard-produced track took over the internet by storm, breaking records on Spotify as the most-streamed diss track. The song's overwhelming popularity led to Drake filing two petitions against Universal Music group, Spotify and iHeartRadio in November, alleging the companies of colluding to "artificially inflate" the song using bots.
In the second petition, he accused UMG of defamation for releasing a song "falsely accusing him of being a s*x offender". The cases are ongoing at the time of this writing.
