With Mac Miller's estate gearing up for the release of Balloonerism on Friday, fans will now also receive a short film of the same name. Mac's upcoming animated film is scheduled to be released and distributed throughout the U.S. on January 15, 2025, with international fans receiving the movie tomorrow.

Multiple "One Night Only" theater screenings are scheduled in countries like the U.K., Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia. The synopsis of the upcoming film, directed by Samuel Jerome Mason, has been described as:

"Balloonerism follows a group of school friends who are transfigured by the music of a chord organ and launched into a shadow world. Swallowed by the turtle of time, they must plod through the underbelly of adulthood."

Tickets for Balloonerism are priced at $5 in the U.S., which is in keeping with the album's lead single, 5 Dollar Pony Rides, which was released to all major DSPs last Friday.

Everything we know about Mac Miller's second posthumous album Balloonerism

Mac Miller's Balloonerism is the second posthumous album to be released after his passing in 2018. It officially follows up on 2020's Circles, which debuted at No.3 on Billboard 200.

According to fan speculation, the late rapper's upcoming album is a previously unreleased LP created during the conceptualization and creation of his eleventh mixtape Faces in 2013.

Based on supposed leaks, fans believe that Balloonerism and Faces share multiple key characteristics like dark themes, introspective lyricism, and jazz undertones in its production.

Following multiple leaks of the album's alleged tracklist two years after Mac Miller's untimely death, friend and collaborator E. Dan, who works as an audio engineer and producer, announced on Reddit that he was working with the late rapper's estate to fully develop and complete the shelved project.

"Pretty much all of the songs you all know as Balloonerism were made inside of a week stemming from what was basically jam sessions. He did indeed move on from it, took a few of the songs for Faces and never got back to it," E. Dan stated in a now-deleted Reddit comment.

The first teaser for a new posthumous Mac Miller album appeared during the 2024 Camp Flog Gnaw festival, which was teased during The Alchemist's set on November 16, 2025.

Less than a week later Mac's estate released the first official trailer for Balloonerism on social media, featuring animated vignettes and a dystopian soundtrack.

The two-and-a-half-minute trailer also confirmed the January 17 release date, which delivers Balloonerism exactly five years after Circles was distributed to streaming platforms and two days before what would have been his 33rd birthday.

According to his estate, Mac had a deep respect for his project and was deep into its production before shelving the project for Faces in 2013, with them even citing that the late rapper had commissioned artwork for Balloonerism, stating:

"To the extent that he commissioned artwork for it and discussions concerning when it should be released were had regularly, though ultimately ‘GOOD AM’ and subsequent albums ended up taking precedence. We believe the project showcases both the breadth of his musical talents and fearlessness as an artist."

Mac Miller's estate went on to address the various leaks that have surfaced over the years, stating:

"Given that unofficial versions of the album have circulated online for years and that releasing ‘Balloonerism’ was something that Malcolm frequently expressed being important to him, we felt it most appropriate to present an official version of the project to the world.”

A week ago, Mac Miller's estate revealed Balloonerism’s finalized tracklist, which confirms 14 full-length records and hosts features from SZA and Delusional Thomas.

Before the LP's release, Mac's estate also dropped the official lead single titled 5 Dollar Pony Rides last Friday, whose jazz-infused production was credited to producer and frequent collaborator Thundercat.
