Social media is buzzing with the rumor that over 400,000 new voter registrations for the 2024 US Presidential Elections came from the link Taylor Swift shared on Instagram.
On September 10, 2024, the songstress wrote a long caption along with her post on Instagram, endorsing Kamala Harris and Tim Walz for the US Presidential Elections on November 5, 2024.
In the latter half of the post, Taylor Swift implored all Americans to register and vote for their favorable candidate after performing thorough research. In a subsequent Instagram story, she shared a custom URL, directing viewers to the official website vote.gov.
According to a GSA spokesperson (reported by Reuters), a total of 405,999 people clicked on that custom link in the 24 hours that her Instagram story was up. This news has been widely misinterpreted across the internet, with people claiming that over 400,000 people registered via Taylor Swift's link.
The custom link is managed by the US General Services Administration (GSA) and doesn't automatically register people to vote. Instead, it redirects people to the state election websites, as official registration is done by the respective states.
Therefore, it is misleading to infer that over 400,000 people registered to vote. All we can say is that 405,999 people clicked on Taylor Swift's custom link on her Instagram story.
While the GSA can't verify exactly how many of the 405,999 visitors registered to vote, it estimates that more than 27,000 new registrations took place through the website on September 11. Furthermore, over 80,000 people verified their registration status on the same day.
"I will give you a child"- Elon Musk's reply to Taylor Swift's Instagram post elicits disgust from his estranged daughter
Billionaire tech magnate Elon Musk was quick to respond to Taylor Swift's Instagram post endorsing Kamala Harris, fixating on how Taylor called herself a 'Childless Cat Lady' - a callback to JD Vance's description of Kamala Harris in a 2021 interview. In an X post on September 10, the owner of the social media platform wrote:
“Fine Taylor ... you win ... I will give you a child and guard your cats with my life.”
The comment amassed widespread criticism from citizens of the country, including Elon Musk's estranged daughter Vivian Wilson. Taking to Instagram Threads, the 20-year-old described Musk's retort as "Heinous incel nonsense."
"I saw "the tweet". Heinous incel nonsense is in fact heinous incel nonsense. I don't really have anything to add to it, it's just abhorrent. That much is obvious and if you don't see how then you're part of the problem," Vivian wrote.
In the same post, she continued:
"I would just like to say to my audience members, don't let people talk to you like that. It's disgusting, it's belittling and incredibly sexist. You deserve better."
Vivian Wilson is one of Elon Musk's twelve children. The 20-year-old's relationship with the Tesla founder strained after she filed a petition to change her name and gender in June 2022.
