Maitreyi Ramakrishnan recently expressed her thoughts on Taylor Swift’s “I Hate It Here” lyric from her highly-anticipated album The Tortured Poets Department.
The 22-year-old Never Have I Ever star said in a now-deleted X post from April 20 that she found the “1830s line” from the song “weird objectively”.
Taylor released TTPD in two segments. "I Hate It Here" appears in the second volume, The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology, in which the songstress says:
“My friends used to play a game where/ We would pick a decade/ We wished we could live in instead of this/ I'd say the 1830s but without all the racists/ And getting married off for the highest bid.”
Maitreyi responded to Swifties who bashed her for criticizing Taylor's lyrics, saying the '1830s' part would sound odd if mentioned out of context.
She later posted another thread on April 21 where she wrote the harsh attacks by fans are the reason nobody can have a conversation about Taylor Swift's music.
Maitreyi added people "ruin the fun" by doing this whereas everyone only wants to appreciate the music and enjoy it.
However, one user @fearlessclerisy commented under the actress's post saying this is why they try to stay away from the fandom, to which, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan replied:
"like fandoms are fun to be apart of when they’re healthy"
"I wasn't even hating??" Maitreyi Ramakrishnan responds to backlash over post about Taylor Swift's lyric
In an apparent glance, Taylor Swift's song "I Hate It Here" from TTPD: The Anthology speaks about the singer's feeling that she does not belong anywhere in the current age.
Thus, she tries to find solace by visiting imaginary places. In one part of the song, Taylor speaks about playing a game with her friends where they each name a decade they wished they lived in instead of the current one.
She goes on that she would pick the 1830s, but without the "racists" and being married off on a bid. As Maitreyi Ramakrishnan shared how she felt about this part of the song, she faced online attacks from Swifties.
However, she later explained the '1830s' part of the lyric would make sense with the preceding and succeeding lines, but if taken out of context, it would sound weird.
The young actress clarified:
"I wasn't even hating??"
Maitreyi explained she only said she found that particular part weird, not the entire song. She then called out Swifties:
"Y'all gatekeep the fandom and make it hard to also appreciate her music without feeling like you're not die hard enough to call yourself a fan. it just sucks"
However, some fans of Taylor apologized to the actress on behalf of the fandom.
Apart from Maitreyi Ramakrishnan's thoughts about "I Hate It Here", Taylor Swift received a general backlash from other listeners over the lyrics.
Some pointed out that Chattel slavery was still prevalent in the 1830s, and criticized Taylor for wanting to live in that era.
