Rapper Fatman Scoop's cause of death was revealed nearly a month after he passed away. A spokesperson for the Connecticut Medical Examiner's Office confirmed on Wednesday, September 25, that Scoop died of heart disease.

The rapper, whose full name was Isaac Freeman III, was also confirmed to have hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. It's a chronic heart condition where there are plaques in the artery walls and can cause a heart attack, stroke, or aortic aneurysm.

Fatman Scoop collapsed onstage during a performance in Hamden, Connecticut, on August 30. He was taken to a hospital shortly after he was given CPR on the stage. However, his family confirmed the following day that Fatman Scoop had passed away via Instagram. The statement from the Freeman family reads in part:

"It is with profound sadness and very heavy hearts that we share news of the passing of the legendary and iconic FatMan Scoop. Last night, the world lost a radiant soul, a beacon of light on the stage and in life."

The rapper's tour manager, Birch Michael, also confirmed his death on Facebook, saying that the rapper "taught [him] how to be the Man [he is] today."

Tributes poured in as Fatman Scoop's death was confirmed

An alleged clip from Fatman Scoop's Hamden performance during his collapse was caught on camera and circulated online. In a video taken from the crowd, the rapper was reportedly hyping the crowd, shouting, "Let's make some noise!" before walking to the back of the stage and into the DJ booth. The legendary hype allegedly man shouted again, saying, "I said Hamden, make some noise!"

As the rapper allegedly climbed the stairs to the DJ booth, his breathing looked labored as he panted into the microphone. He reportedly continued to hype the crowd, but his words started slurring before he collapsed into the ground, dropping the microphone.

Paramedics then rushed onstage, and he was reportedly taken away to the hospital shortly, while his fellow performers and the crowd stood in eerie silence.

Tributes from the hip-hop community and fans poured shortly after Fatman Scoop's death made headlines the day after his collapse onstage. Missy Elliott, who worked with Freeman for her 2005 hit Lose Control, honored the late rapper on X. Besides sharing prayers for Scoop's family, the singer noted that the rapper's "VOICE & energy have contributed to MANY songs that made the people feel HAPPY."

Ciara, who also worked with Elliot and Fatman Scoop in Lose Control shared a video of the late rapper on X. She expressed her gladness to have experienced Scoop's "greatness," and called the rapper "one of the best voices in hip-hop."

Ludacris also shared a tribute on Instagram, saying that he considers Scoop one of the people who "reminded you what the word LOVE Truly means." He added that every person the rapper came into contact with "felt that LOVE & that PASSION."

Questlove remembered the late rapper in his lengthy Instagram tribute as the "embodiment of what hip hop was truly about." DJ D-Nice also shared on Instagram how the late rapper "was always kind to [him]."
