Actress Jenna Ortega may have inadvertently reignited the feud between Britpop giants Oasis and Blur. In an interview with NME that came out on September 2, 2024, she weighed in on the return of Oasis. She claimed that she had no idea they were getting back together, and only heard Wonderwall last month for the first time. She was on a promotional tour for her upcoming film Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

During her interview, she was probed about her preferences between Blur and Oasis, and she said,

“Can I be honest? I actually just heard ‘Wonderwall’ for the first time a month ago. I actually sat down and listened to the whole thing. It was a whole thing that I got attacked for not knowing about it by an ex. ”

The feud between the two bands can be traced back to the '90s, as Britpop was soaring in success. Both bands were on a mission to dominate the charts. However, things reached new heights when, in August 1995, Blur shifted the release of their single Country House to coincide with that of Oasis' Roll With It. Many viewed the move as a direct challenge, while some say it was a crime of romance that started it all.

The feud between Oasis and Blur explained

In an August 1995 interview, Noel said that he hoped Damon and Graham Coxon of Blur would "catch AIDS and die." However, he later claimed that it was just a "joke." Regardless, it was not this comment, nor was it the music, that reportedly triggered the war between them. Instead, it was a romantic rivalry.

Noel came to reveal in the 2019 book Don't Look Back In Anger that the two were sleeping with "the same bird, and there was a lot of cocaine involved." Alan McGee, the man who signed Oasis on to his label, Creation Records, backed him up at the time, the book claims.

"There was a situation with a girl. That created the Britpop war. Damon s****ed somebody close to Liam. It was one of many women Damon was friendly with. Then he got off with her for a one-night stand and that created the rub. They were all goading each other after that," Alan said.

Soon, Blur started scheduling the release of their singles for the same week as Oasis. Regardless, Oasis came out on top with Some Might Say in April 1995. Damon told NME that he had gone to their celebration party to tell them about their job well done, but Liam decided to rub it in his face. He said,

“I went to their celebration party, y’know, just to say ‘Well done’. And Liam came over and, like he is, he goes, ‘Number f***in’ One!’, right in my face. So I thought, ‘OK we’ll see…’”

It was also the same year that Liam passed the comment on wishing death upon Damon and Graham.

Notably, Liam denied these claims of romantic rivalry, when, on April 26, 2020, he took to X to divulge what really happened.

"Just for the record me and Dermot oblong never fell out over a girl or boy we always had the craic think things turned nasty when Noel Gallagher wished he Dermot caught AIDS and die not Rkid’s finest moment as you were LG x."

Years later, while Liam may not have, Noel mended ways with Damon. The two even went on to work on a 2017 album, Humanz, together. In August 2018, Damon said in an interview with NME that the two don't look back at the past. Instead, they only look at the present. He also shared that he was grateful for his friendship with Noel because "he is one of the only people who went through what I did in the Nineties.”

Jenna Ortega claims she "doesn't have a history with Oasis listening"

Now, the feud has once again come to light upon the announcement of an Oasis reunion and Jenna Ortega's comments. She said that she "had no idea they were back" together. Jenna also turned to co-star Catherine O'Hara and asked her which band she preferred, the latter responded with Oasis. But when the latter realized she was asked to pick a side, she said she wouldn't do it.

However, Jenna made one thing clear: She's a Blur-head. She continued in the interview,

“I listen to Blur. I haven’t really gotten into Oasis – I don’t really have a history with Oasis and Oasis listening to really say.”

Jenna Ortega and Catherine O'Hara's upcoming film, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, will roll into theatres on September 26.
