Pop icon Britney Spears may not have attended the 2024 MTV VMAs, but she was definitely not forgotten. Multiple stars, including Sabrina Carpenter, Megan Thee Stallion, and Tate McRae, paid homage to Spears' iconic moments at the famed awards over the years during their performances.
Spears has made headlines over the years for her iconic VMA moments, including her kiss with Madonna, her 2000 performance of I Can’t Get No Satisfaction and Oops!...I Did It Again, and her 2001 performance of I'm a Slave 4 U. The popstar was nominated for the Most Iconic Performance at the 2024 MTV VMAs.
On the red carpet, multiple celebrities also referred to iconic Britney Spears moments from the past as their most memorable MTV VMA moments. Addison Rae referred to the popstar's 2000 performance, while Halsey recalled her famous kiss with Madonna.
The star-studded night was followed by multiple dazzling performances, many of which paid homage to Spears and her iconic moments from the MTA VMAs.
Every performance at the 2024 MTV VMAs that paid homage to Britney Spears
The 2024 MTV VMAs featured three significant performances that paid tribute to Britney Spears and her past legacy. These performances were by Sabrina Carpenter, Megan Thee Stallion, and Tate McRae.
Sabrina Carpenter
Sabrina Carpenter's performance at the 2024 MTV VMAs was one of the most awaited ones for the evening. For her performance, the popstar sang a mashup of three of her most famous hits, Taste, Please Please Please, and Expresso.
She made her grand entry on stage while sitting on a glitter-infused swing, a throwback to Britney Spears in her 2000 music video, Lucky. Carpenter also played a short verse from Spears' Oops! … I Did It Again.
Carpenter also included a reference to Britney Spears' famed kiss with pop icon Madonna in the 2003 MTV VMAs, as she kissed one of her alien backup dancers during her performance.
Megan Thee Stallion
Rapper Megan Thee Stallion was another star who paid homage to Britney Spears' iconic 2001 performance on I'm Slave 4 U. Stallion turned up with a live python around her neck, as a callback to Spears pulling off a similar stunt in the 2001 event.
She wore a green top and micro-jean shorts for the rest of her outfit, much like Spears turning up in a green bra with a massive python on her shoulders at the 2001 MTV VMAs.
Moments later, Stallion shouted out to the crew to stop the music and asked them to get the python off her. She said, “I’m just playing, come get this thing!" as a reference to Spears' performance. The rapper also gave a shoutout to Spears after recreating the moment.
Tate McRae
Tate McRae paid tribute to Britney Spears' popular 2001 MTV VMAs red carpet look. McRae turned up in a black lace dress by Roberto Cavalli as a callback to Spears' Dolce and Gabbana outfit from the 2001 event.
The singer is frequently compared to Spears due to her pop songs and dance inspirations. Celebrity stylist Bret Alan Nelson put together the rest of the look with kitten heels, blonde highlights, and some solitaire jewelry.
