Cardi B and Sexyy Red took to X in a wave of reactions after TikTok was restored just hours after facing a ban. On January 19, 2025, Cardi B took to her X account to share her response to the brief ban of the Chinese app.

She described the situation as "the funniest day on Twitter" due to how quickly the app was restored after the ban.

"Today gotta be the funniest day on twitter 😩 y’all are literally killin me… when did y’all get this hilarious??? 😂😂😂," Cardi B wrote.

Reacting to the situation, Sexyy Red tweeted a clip from an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants, in which Nat Peterson and Patty Rechid, acting as officers, briefly incarcerated SpongeBob and Patrick Star, only to quickly release them.

Sexyy Red connected this brief moment of incarceration with the short-lived ban of the Chinese app, captioning it —

"This how da TikTok ban went," Sexxy Red wrote.

The two rappers' tweets followed an official update from the Chinese app team on X confirming that they had begun the process of restoring the app in the United States. This move came after Donald Trump clarified and assured about the app's reinstatement.

TikTok starts resuming service in the US after a brief shutdown

On January 19, 2025, TikTok issued a statement confirming the restoration of the app. Expressing gratitude toward President-elect Donald Trump for his support, the company announced that it would work with the President to find a long-term solution that would allow it to continue operating in the United States.

"In agreement with our service providers, TikTok is in the process of restoring service. We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers...," a portion of the tweet reads.

The Chinese app was banned in the United States due to national security concerns, a law passed by Congress. The primary issue revolved around the app’s ownership by ByteDance, a Chinese company.

United States lawmakers and security experts raised concerns that the Chinese government could access the data of American users and use it for surveillance or influence campaigns.

The app faced an ultimatum to shut down by Sunday, January 19, 2025. However, just hours before the deadline, the Chinese app voluntarily shut down its services across the United States, stating that users should stay tuned for further updates.

"A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can't use TikTok for now. We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned!" the message read.

Donald Trump, whose inauguration as President is scheduled to happen on Monday, January 20, took to his Truth Social account on Sunday, suggesting that the American people deserved an exciting inauguration and called for the restoration of the app

"The order will also confirm that there will be no liability for any company that helped keep TikTok from going dark before my order. Americans deserve to see our exciting inauguration on Monday, as well as other events and conversations"

The Senate and Congress have yet to decide whether the app will be completely restored for its 170 million users in the United States.
