On July 24, Canadian rapper and singer Tory Lanez, who is currently serving a ten-year-long prison sentence for shooting and injuring American rapper Megan Thee Stallion, released a pre-recorded prison call on his social media platforms including Instagram.

He began by greeting his fans as “Umbrellas” and claimed that he had a “quick update” to share with them. Lanez said:

“I got a lot of good news, man. First and foremost, I want to talk about the music. After about 20-something to 30-something f**k-ups and mistakes, me and my engineer have finally figured out how to record music over the jail phone and still keep the quality as professional as I had it on the street.”

The 31-year-old further went on to say:

“It’s over. I done cracked the f**king code man. This means that not even these prison walls can stop me from dropping new music. It’s crazy. That being said, man, I’m about to start dropping hot heaps of coal on y’all head top. You know what I mean? I am dropping the all-new Free Tory playlist.”

Tory Lanez teased the upcoming music (dropping on July 26) and said it was going to be “updated every week with new music” he was recording inside the prison walls in “real-time.” He added by saying how it was meant to be “one of its kind,” and assuring his fans “No matter where they put me, they can’t lock down my spirit.”

In the wake of his now-viral prison call recording, the internet is having varied reactions. For instance, Instagram user @otfmz_pdadon commented under The Shade Room’s repost of the audio by saying how Tory Lanez was going to experience more success than Megan Thee Stallion.

“He bout to sell more than Megan,” the user wrote.

Several others joined in the conversation on X(formerly Twitter) and shared a similar opinion.

“Prison Tapes gonna sell more in its first ten minutes than Meg’s album sold in its first week,” one individual wrote.
“Is he gonna mention Megan on every other song?” another individual asked.
“He bout to make better music than Meg while locked behind bars, sad,” one individual wrote.

Some lauded his determination and productivity despite being imprisoned.

“The determination in this man is crazy,” one person wrote.
“Bein’ productive in prison, I see,” another person wrote.
“Dedication. Respect,” another person said.

On the other hand, his fans continued to demand his release from jail and said they had been praying for him.

“Free Tory man,” one netizen wrote.
“I used to pray for times like this,” another netizen wrote.
“We will be there,” another netizen said.

Elsewhere in the prison call, Tory Lanez also shared his gratitude towards God and said he knew his plight was only “temporary.” He also claimed that no matter where he was, his spirit, ambition, soul, passion, and destiny were intact, and assured his fans that he’ll be home soon.

He also captioned his Instagram post, “Umbrellas, never let them stop you because I’ve never let them stop me,” and shared a link to his forthcoming prison tapes/ playlist.

The latest post comes in the wake of Tory Lanez dropping 'Lost Tapes' twice every week this July. He has released six new singles so far. They comprise previously unreleased moments from his career dating back from 2015 to 2020.

About Tory Lanez’s prison sentence

In July 2020, Tory Lanez shot Megan Thee Stallion in the foot, following which she had to undergo surgery and a prolonged recovery. Three months later, after a lot of legal dispute between the two parties, Lanez was charged with three felony counts.

In April 2022, he was arrested for violating his probation. In December 2022, he was convicted by a jury on the charges including discharging a firearm with gross negligence, assault with a semiautomatic handgun, and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle.

In August 2023, Tory Lanez was sentenced to a decade in prison and is currently serving at the North Kern State Prison in Delano, California. Despite his conviction, he has maintained his innocence in the matter and has refused to apologize.
