On August 23, rapper and reggae fusion singer Sean Kingston was spotted running away from reporters following a court hearing in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for a $1 million wire fraud charge. He was seen escaping cameras and entering his black Cadillac Escalade.
Behind him was his mother and co-defendant, Janice Turner, who was also seen running, yelling, making weird gestures, and trying to flip off a camera on the pavement before entering a separate car, a Mercedes Maybach S-class sedan.
The incident's video went viral on August 25 and has earned diverse reactions from social media users. For instance, Instagram user @letroydavis commented on The Neighborhood Talk’s post of the clip and pointed out that Sean Kingston did not leave the courthouse along with his mother but seemingly left her behind to follow after him.
Several others shared similar reactions on the X platform, with some making fun of Sean Kingston for running in “slow motion.”
“How did they think they could run at that pace and escape,” a person asked.
“First time running,” one person wrote.
“Bro is running in slow motion,” another person wrote.
Others claimed that they were running because they knew that they were “guilty” and were on their way to “prison.”
“They going to jail for sure. Running cuz they know they guilty,” a netizen wrote.
“Yay, time for prison,” one netizen wrote.
“They better run they know they don’t have a lot of time left,” another netizen wrote.
“Sounds like they got caught up in some serious trouble,” another individual wrote.
Exploring the charges against Sean Kingston and his mother
In May 2024, Sean Kingston and his mother, Janice Turner, were arrested and charged with multiple felony counts. These include conducting an organized scheme to defraud, grand theft, identity theft, and similar other charges as per their arrest warrants issued by the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Per the accusations, the mother-son duo reportedly stole several luxury items between October 2023 and March 2024 by seemingly exploiting Sean’s celebrity status. Some of the stolen items include over $500,000 in jewelry, $200,000 from Bank of America, $160,000 from an Escalade dealer, $100,000 from First Republic Bank, and $86,000 from a furniture maker.
Later, they were released on bail, only to be indicted by a grand jury the following month. In July, Sean Kingston and Janice Turner appeared before the Miami Federal Court, facing two counts of wire fraud charges. These included conspiracy to commit wire fraud and involvement in a scheme to defraud sellers of high-end specialty vehicles, jewelry, and other goods bought using fake IDs.
Last Friday (August 23), they appeared before the court for the second time. Both times, they reportedly pled not guilty. The 34-year-old Kingston and 61-year-old Turner each face one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and five counts of wire fraud. If convicted, they could face up to 20 years in prison each for stealing over $1 million in assets.
Notably, both the mother and son have previous convictions. For instance, Sean Kingston is currently on two-year probation for trafficking stolen property. Meanwhile, Janice Turner pled guilty to bank fraud after stealing over $160,000 in 2006 and served roughly 18 months in federal prison.
