Singer Liam Payne unexpectedly died on October 16, 2024, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, at the age of 31. The former One Direction member was at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel when he allegedly fell from the third-floor balcony and succumbed to his injuries. While the authorities initially didn't reveal much about Payne's death, they have since shared some details about it.
The Buenos Aires Police Department disclosed that Payne's death was a result of multiple injuries resulting from a fall, as per Page Six. A spokesperson for the Security Ministry of Buenos Aires municipality, Pablo Policicchio, spoke to the Associated Press about Payne's death. The spokesperson claimed that Payne allegedly jumped from the balcony of the room where he was staying.
On the day of the singer's death, police received a call from the hotel manager, who claimed that one of their guests was an aggressive man, possibly under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The head of the state emergency medical system, Alberto Crescenti, confirmed the same during an interview with Todo Noticias.
The manager claimed that the guest was destroying their hotel room and requested immediate help from the police. When officers arrived at the hotel, around seven minutes later, they heard a thud and found Liam Payne lying in the courtyard.
During his conversation with Todo Noticias, Crescenti claimed that Payne fell around 13 or 14 meters below the ground. He said that an autopsy is being conducted and the case remains under investigation.
"Unfortunately, he had injuries incompatible with life due to the fall, so we had to confirm the death. There was no possibility of resuscitation," he said.
A few eyewitnesses reportedly claimed that they saw Liam Payne behaving differently while he was sitting in the hotel's lobby. They also stated that he allegedly smashed his laptop, due to which he was taken back to his room.
Liam Payne was struggling with his personal life issues before his death
The Wolverhampton, West Midlands native gained recognition over the years for his association with One Direction. The singer also released several solo projects that turned out to be successful.
While his demise has led to a lineup of tributes on different platforms, he was also dealing with other problems over the years. A source for People magazine claimed that the singer was reportedly overwhelmed while he was preparing for a legal battle with his ex-fiancée, Maya Henry.
Liam Payne received a cease-and-desist letter from Maya Henry's legal team earlier this week where he was told to avoid any kind of contact with her. This happened after Payne reportedly tried to get in touch with Henry.
The latter indirectly addressed the same in a TikTok video where she claimed that the singer "will blow up" her phone with messages.
"Ever since we broke up he messages me, will blow up my phone, not only from his phone, it's always from different phone numbers too, so I never know where it's gonna come from," she said.
An insider for Page Six also mentioned that Payne's behavior became a topic of discussion for different reasons in the last few years. They said that while the singer was "open about his struggles," he "tried to downplay them at times." They noted that Payne's "demons were much worse than he let on."
Notably, Liam Payne was dealing with his addiction problems and he spoke about the same on different occasions. He even entered rehab in 2023 and addressed his experience while coming out of the place after 100 days in a YouTube video.
"I didn't connect to the outside world at all and it was kind of prepping me for that moment. Upon leaving was actually the hardest point was turning the phone back on… because it was a little bit scary," Liam said.
Buenos Aires authorities are investigating Liam Payne's death further.
Liam Payne's survivors include his son Bear Grey Payne, his parents, Geoff and Karen Payne, and his two sisters, Ruth and Nicola.
