Young Thug's long-going trial finally came to an end, with two defendants found not guilty. The decision came a few months after Thug pleaded guilty in October 2024. Yak Gotti and Shannon Stillwell were the two defendants acquitted of severe charges, including racketeering, murder, and gang-related charges.
While Gotti was cleared of all charges, Stillwell was convicted only of a gun possession charge. As reported by 11Alive, attorney Doug Weinstein weighed in on the outcome, stating:
"We were thrilled. [Kendrick is] looking forward to getting out, getting back to his music, getting back to his family. I have got to thank Judge [Paige] Whitaker. The entire case changed when she took over. We got a fair trial."
Meanwhile, Thug's lawyer, Brian Steel, revealed that he initially wanted to wait for the verdict because he thought they were winning. However, Thug opted not to wait. Attorney Keith Adams later shared that Thug regretted his decision after seeing the decision of the case, stating that they could have waited.
After Thug's lawyer's recent remarks surfaced online, netizens flocked to social media platforms to react. A user (@Comptonx187) wrote:
"He just wanted to come home."
Several netizens expressed their take on the rapper's lawyer's recent comments.
"What’s done is done. Thug home, just gotta move different," another netizen wrote.
"That was going to be the outcome anyway they were after Thug they didn’t care the others," explained another one.
"He played the safer route any thing could have happened," added a tweet.
Many thought that the case was inevitably a win for Young Thug's defense team.
"He should have fought it all the way. They literally had nothing," stated another one.
"Damn he on 15 year probation for no reason," commented a netizen.
Young Thug's father defends his son's guilty plea
While defense attorney Keith Adams revealed that Young Thug had regrets upon seeing his co-defendants getting acquitted, the rapper's father, Big Jeff, didn't seem to share those regrets. In an interview with 11Alive after Thug's plea deal, Big Jeff stated:
"He did what he felt like he wanted to do. He's grown. He made his own decision."
Big Jeff further mentioned his son's current state, revealing that he was doing a lot better outside prison, even if he is under probation. As reported by ABC News, Young Thug wasn't just sentenced to be on probation but also restricted from entering metro Atlanta except for special occasions.
While charges against Yak Gotti and Shannon Stillwell in the trial were dismissed, their attorneys confirmed that they were facing other charges as well. The lawyers stated that they were hopeful that both Gotti and Stillwell would be released from prison.
According to ABC News, nine defendants connected to the case, including Gunna, accepted plea deals even before the trial began. Four others pleaded guilty in October during the trial. As for the decision, the defense attorneys stated that they were satisfied that the defendants could now move on in their respective lives.
