Metro Boomin, who sided with Kendrick Lamar in his highly-publicized rap battle with Drake, was recently spotted playing the latter's songs in a nightclub in Canada. Metro produced the track Like That, where Lamar dropped a guest verse that kicked off the feud when it was released in March 2024.
The clip, posted by @AkademiksTV on X on July 10, was met with varied reactions, with one person tweeting:
"Metro Booming playing Drake in Canada, he knows he finna get jumped by the Canadians if he plays bs."
More people added to the discourse to mock Metro Boomin, saying he didn't want to get "beat up" on Drake's turf.
"Metro Groomin didn’t wanna get beat up," one person tweeted.
"So haters said it was a L for Drake to slide on the BBL drizzy beat.. but it’s not a L for Metro to play Drakes music?.. all the Future and 21 savage music that he has but he chooses to play Drake?" another person added.
"only Drake’s music is played Drake is never being played," wrote someone else.
Others wondered why Metro Boomin was not playing Kendrick Lamar songs after siding with him.
"why isnt he playing kendrick, looks like someone regret choosing a side," speculated a fan.
"Do they ever play Kenny "The Culture" Lamar in their DJ sets? If Kenny actually won, they should be playing his music but they are not," commented another person.
However, some added that he had the right to play the tracks as he produced them.
"It’s called taking ownership of the songs he produced. That’s a boss move," tweeted someone.
"Well he did produce it so it is his song," added another person.
Metro Boomin released a Drake diss beat during the Kendrick Lamar-Drake beef
During his battle with Kendrick Lamar, Drake went head-to-head with several rappers, including Rick Ross, The Weeknd, A$AP Rocky, and Metro Boomin. They had all previously collaborated with Drake at different points in their careers. Metro produced most of the tracks in Drake and Future's collaborative 2015 album, What a Time to Be Alive.
However, these friends supposedly turned foes after Metro Boomin felt snubbed when Drake and 21 Savage's Her Loss won Best Rap Album at the 2024 Grammys over his album Heroes & Villains, which he expressed on X.
Following this, Metro Boomin teamed up with Future, another frequent Drake collaborator, to release two albums called We Don't Trust You in March and We Still Don't Trust You in April. According to Billboard, both albums were filled with Drake diss tracks featuring artists like Kendrick Lamar (Like That), The Weeknd (All to Myself), and A$AP Rocky (Show of Hands).
Lamar's explosive verse on Like That shook the hip-hop industry as he fired at J. Cole and Drake, who collaborated on First Person Shooter, which came out in December 2023.
Drake mentioned Metro Boomin in his diss tracks Push Ups and Family Matters, and addressed Lamar, Ross, The Weeknd, and Rocky. Metro's response came in the form of BBL Drizzy, a free rap beat that he encouraged novice rappers to use. He also ran a competition for who could come up with the best verse, incentivizing them with a $10,000 reward.
Drake eventually rapped over the beat when he was featured on Sexyy Red's track U My Everything, released on June 25, after the feud seemingly ended. Lamar was crowned the undisputed winner when he released the smash hit Not Like Us.
