On June 26, 2024, rapper Drake shared an image of an AI robot on his Instagram story, leading to widespread speculation among netizens. The story featured a white robot sitting in an apparent pensive mood while resting its head on its hand. A green body portion which seemed to be wires was visible around the robot's neck.
While the story did not include any other text or hint about what it could refer to. Fans have taken to X (formerly Twitter) to speculate what Drizzy indicated with his Instagram story, amid controversy over his use of AI technology in music in the last few months.
Most notably, the rapper used AI to recreate deceased rapper Tupac Shakur and icon Snoop Dogg's voice in his diss track, Taylor Made Freestyle, aimed at Kendrick Lamar. One fan speculated that the Canadian rapper might let AI make a song.
"Thinking of all the Bots about to be used for Kenny’s video," one person said.
"Bro considering just switching up from ghost writers to AI," another fan added.
"So it looks like he just gonna keep sneak dissing on IG now this a really bad look," another person wrote.
"Casual Kendrick fan," a user commented.
Fans have been wondering if Drizzy posting the image of a robot is a hint at how he'll be using AI technology in his new music in the future. Some also wondered if this is a diss towards Lamar, but most fans speculated the use of AI in writing his lyrics.
"that's his ghostwriter," an X user wrote.
"He's impressed bc of the progression of ai over the last few weeks," another person said.
"The robot a machine = the industry. They gotta go back to the white board or round table cause this attempt still wasn't a full takeout," a user suggested.
While referring to the rapper's six-year-old son, one person said:
"He gave Adonis the phone," a fan added.
Drake used AI technology to recreate Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg's voice in Taylor Made Freestyle
On April 19, 2024, Drake released his diss track, Taylor Made Freestyle, aimed at Kendrick Lamar, after the latter dissed Drizzy and J Cole in her verse in Future and Metro Boomin's Like That. K Dot and Drizzy continued their beef until the end of May.
After K Dot dissed Drake in his verse in Like That, Drizzy released a diss track titled Push Ups. Lamar took a while to respond to his diss and the Toronto rapper hit at him once again with Taylor Made Freestyle.
In his diss track, the rapper reportedly used AI technology to recreate the voice of the deceased legendary rapper, Tupac Shakur. Many speculated that Drake rapped the lines himself and manipulated how it sounded using AI, or used the technology to generate the voices.
The lyrics were written as though Shakur was calling out Kendrick Lamar for not responding to Drizzy's previous diss track, Push Ups. The lyrics went:
"Kendrick we need ya, the West Coast savior / Engraving your name in some hip-hop history/ Call him a b***h for me / Talk about him liking young girls as a gift for me.
The lyrics continued in Shakur's computer-generated voice:
"You seem a little nervous about all the publicity/ You asked for the smoke, now it seems you too busy for the smoke."
He reportedly used AI technology to recreate the voice of another fellow rapper, Snoop Dogg. Dogg's voice also seemed to be addressing Lamar. The lyrics read:
“World is watching this chess game, but oh you out of moves Dot [Kendrick] / You know that the OG never f***ing doubted you / But right now it seem like you posted up without a clue / Or what the f**k you ’bout to do.”
At the end of the rap track, Drake himself comes in with his own verse and urges Kendrick to respond to his previous diss track. The lyrics further read:
“The first one really only took me an hour or two / The next one is really ’bout to bring out the coward in you/ But now we gotta wait a f**king week ’cause Taylor Swift is your new Top/And if you ’bout to drop, she gotta approve / This girl really ’bout to make you act like you not in a feud."
The Toronto rapper referred to Taylor Swift as he supposedly indicated that Lamar has been delaying his response because the pop star released her latest studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, in the same time frame.
Swift's album was released on April 19, 2024 (the same date as Drake's Taylor Made Freestyle) and broke multiple musical records. Drake supposedly indicated that Kendrick did not want to compete with the hype and added that Taylor must approve what Kendrick eventually releases.
Drake deleted Taylor Made Freestyle from social media
The Canadian rapper was reportedly approached by the late rapper Tupac Shakur's estate after he dropped Taylor Made Freestyle on social media, including Shakur's AI-generated voice allegedly without their permission.
Attorneys representing Shakur's estate reportedly threatened to sue Drake and sent him a legal notice. Litigator Howard King released a statement to Billboard, mentioning a legal notice had been sent to Drake about the song. The statement read:
“Not only is the record a flagrant violation of Tupac’s publicity and the estate’s legal rights, it is also a blatant abuse of the legacy of one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time."
The lawyers also mentioned that they did not approve of the use of Shakur's voice to diss Kendrick Lamar, whom they called a "good friend to the estate." It read:
"The estate would never have given its approval for this use. The unauthorized, equally dismaying use of Tupac’s voice against Kendrick Lamar, a good friend to the estate who has given nothing but respect to Tupac and his legacy publicly and privately, compounds the insult.”
Drake removed Taylor Made Freestyle from all his social media platforms supposedly after receiving the legal notice from Shakur's estate.
