On the September 10, 2024 episode of the New Rory & MAL podcast, co-host Jamil “Mal” Clay claimed that Drake has turned down the opportunity to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show multiple times over the years.
A frequent defender of Drake, MAL said on the podcast:
“Drake has been offered this Super Bowl show for some years now and has turned it down. Probably four years, he’s been offered to perform at the Super Bowl, said no for whatever reason. Drake has turned down the Super Bowl a few years.”
This statement came after it was announced that Kendrick Lamar would headline the Super Bowl halftime show in February 2025. Netizens have since taken to the internet to express their disbelief over MAL’s claims. One user on X wrote:
"he's just salty Kendrick is bigger than him"
Several other netizens expressed their opinions on the statement.
“funny how this comes out right when kendrick got the super bowl performance,” an X user said.
“This is a clear lie,” another platform user said.
Kendrick Lamar took to social media to say, “What the deal everybody, my name is Kendrick Lamar. I’ll be performing at Super Bowl 59. Will you be pulling up?” The championship final will be taking place in New Orleans, Louisiana. Meanwhile, other reactions read:
“it’s funny how people around him keep saying hes unbothered when hes clearly not lol,” an X user said.
“Why do I feel like this is cap,” another platform user said.
“I’ve also turned down performing at the superbowl multiple times, I’m too busy,” a netizen jokingly said.
Drake had not publicly commented on Kendrick Lamar’s latest Super Bowl announcement at the time of writing this article. Meanwhile, other reactions read:
“Ain’t nobody big enough to turn down the Super Bowl stop capping,” a netizen said.
“whatever helps y’all sleep at night,” another X user said.
Many believe Kendrick Lamar dissed Drake in Super Bowl promotional video
On Sunday, September 8, 2024, Kendrick Lamar, the NFL, and Apple Music confirmed that the Humble crooner would be performing at the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show. In a promotional video, Lamar could be seen running a practice session with unseen receivers off-screen. He also said in the clip:
“You know it’s only one opportunity to win a championship; no round tows. I wouldn’t want you to miss it. Meet me in New Orleans, February 9, 2025. Wear your best dressed too, every if you’re watching from home.”
Netizens quickly speculated that “no round twos” could be a reference to a social media post from Drake’s rumored Instagram burner account, where Drizzy hinted that he would return with a second round of songs to diss K. Dot.
Meanwhile, Super Bowl music strategist and Roc Nation founder Jay-Z has garnered backlash from Lil Wayne supporters, Birdman, and Nicki Minaj, among many, for not choosing Weezy to perform at the halftime show. Many felt that since New Orleans is Lil Wayne's hometown, he would have been a more appropriate choice for the event.
