Comedian Dusty Slay, in a recent episode of the Nateland podcast, opined that Post Malone’s F-1 Trillion album is not in the country music genre. He said that none of Post Malone's new songs belong in the country music genre even though he is getting approval from some of the most successful country artists.
In the podcast, which he hosts alongside fellow comedians Nate Bargatze, Brian Bates, and Aaron Weber, he said:
"This guy’s sweeping country music. He’s taking country music by storm and not even doing country."
He expressed his dissatisfaction with the White Iverson hitmaker's recent transition into the country music genre and said:
"I can’t stand it. I don’t have anything against Post Malone, but he’s not doing country. None of his songs are country, none of the new ones."
He continued:
"And then every country singer that I ever loved is posting pictures with him on social media and it just makes me sadder every day.”
Dusty Slay argues that music genres should have boundaries
In the podcast uploaded on YouTube on September 11, 2024, and titled Episode #217 California with Nick Thune, Dusty Slay stated that none of Post Malone’s songs are country including the ones from his latest album.
Some of the podcast’s other co-hosts then argued that the singer was pushing the genre forward to which Dusty responded that the genre should have boundaries if it was going to be termed country.
"All I’m saying, what is the point of a genre if there’s no boundaries?,” Dusty Slay said.
These comments sparked a debate online as some netizens argued that F-1 Trillion features enough country music elements, while others have agreed with Dusty, stating that it strays too far from country music.
Dusty has since continued to defend his stance. He posted on X that even though F-1 Trillion boasts collaborations with country stars like Dolly Parton, Luke Combs, and Blake Shelton, amongst others, it still isn't country music.
"This is hard for people to understand, this album is full of country musicians but it ain’t country music,” the comedian wrote on X.
He later conceded that some tracks on the album like Post Malone's duet with Sierra Ferrell and Billy Strings had elements of country music. The comedian’s final take on the debate was that F-1 Trillion could be considered a country album, even though "it is not his favorite type of country."
Post Malone’s transition into country music has been met with mixed reactions. Vulture magazine described the album as "indistinct":
“feels prefab and indistinct, and that’s surprising for someone whose best and worst work has always felt like a genuine extension of often diverging interests.”
Esquire described F-1 Trillion as :
"A love letter to a genre and an endearing flex of star power."
F-1 Trillion has achieved commercial success. The album debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 chart. Its lead track, I Had Some Help featuring Morgan Wallen is the second longest-running number-one song on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2024 and has received four nominations for the Country Music Association Awards set to air on November 20, 2024.
