Chance the Rapper and Kirsten Corley are getting divorced after being together for around 5 years. Notably, the duo announced their separation in April this year and Kirsten approached Cook County courthouse in Illinois for divorce on December 13, 2024, as per TMZ's December 17 report.

However, further updates are currently awaited about the divorce conditions mentioned in the legal documents. As per TMZ's update, the couple reportedly has a prenuptial agreement. Corley is seeking child support for their two daughters, Kensli, 9, and Marli, 5, who live with her, but has waived any request for spousal maintenance.

While confirming their split on April 3, 2024, Chance and Kirsten posted a joint statement through the former’s Instagram Story, which reads:

“After a period of separation, the two of us have arrived at the decision to part ways. We came to this decision amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together. God has blessed us with two beautiful daughters who we will continue to raise together.”

Furthermore, Chance the Rapper and Kirsten Corley additionally requested privacy at the time. Apart from this, the pair did not disclose anything else about the circumstances leading to their split.

While the news of the divorce went viral on different platforms, netizens began posting their reactions below the social media post of The Shade Room. One of them also wrote:

“He should’ve never went to carnival.”

The reaction referred to the time when a video of Chance the Rapper started trending on different platforms last year. The clip reportedly featured Chance dancing with another woman during a Carnival in Jamaica.

Social media users continued reacting, with one of them questioning the reason for celebrities announcing their separation and divorce through any platform. A few others specifically highlighted the fact that Chance and Kirsten were asking for privacy and still shared a statement.

Chance the Rapper was criticized for the carnival video last year

As mentioned, the Chicago, Illinois native’s viral video at the Jamaica Carnival created headlines in April 2023. The clip was shared by a model named Mela Millz through Instagram where Chance the rapper appeared shirtless and was wearing a pair of shorts alongside a hat.

The video received severe criticism from the public, who claimed that it lacked an understanding of cultural traditions and the essence of Carnival. However, a few others came in support, saying that it was normal to celebrate in such ways at the Carnival.

Soon after, Kirsten Corley seemingly responded to the video by sharing a photo on her Instagram page. It included a paragraph from the late poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou’s book Letter to My Daughter. Kirsten highlighted a portion in the photo that says that people don’t grow up and instead, they get older, calling it a reality. The paragraph also mentions:

“But to grow up costs the earth, the earth. It means you take responsibility for the time you take up, for the space you occupy. It’s serious business. And you find out what it costs us to love and to lose, to dare and to fail. And maybe even more, to succeed.”

Chance the Rapper also responded to the viral clip through an Instagram post the same month, which has been deleted now. The 31-year-old posted Bill Burr's clip from his 2019 Netflix stand-up special Paper Tiger, which stated that he loves his “wife to death” and that despite being married, they still fight and argue. The clip stated:

“If I’ve learnt anything in five years of being married is we’re always working on me. Evidently, my wife is this completed work under museum glass that is to be admired and studied.”
