False images of R. Kelly giving a concert in prison went viral earlier this year
In May 2024, pictures of the convicted R&B singer singing in prison with a room full of inmates went viral online. The caption that accompanied the social media post read:
“They got R. Kelly on tour going to all da jails doing concerts.”
However, it was later confirmed that the images were created using Artificial Intelligence. A Federal Bureau spokesperson also confirmed that inmates were not allowed to travel across prison facilities, as the social media post suggested.
If one put the images under a tool that analyzes digitally altered images, like TrueMedia.org, it was found that the image was 99% likely created by using programs like MidJourney.
The musician will be eligible for release in 2045. Meanwhile, the documentary Surviving R. Kelly garnered immense traction after chronicling the story of the singer's victims. The Lifetime docuseries aired in 2019 subsequently led to him being dropped by his record company.
