Indian homegrown rapper, bar spitter, and fitness enthusiast Hanumankind dropped his latest single Big Dawgs on July 10 under the Def Jam India record label.
“Burn my body, pour my ashes in a river y’all. That’s how we knowing that flow bout to carry on,” he raps.
The single was accompanied by a music video featuring Hanumankind and Kalmi, who has also acted as its producer. It shows daredevil stunts in what is being dubbed the “well of death,” a metaphor used for the creative aspects of the Indian hip-hop genre that the track celebrates.
The “well of death” spectacle in the Big Dawgs music video showed a barrel-shaped cylindrical structure through which motorcycles and cars rode around at racing speeds. Between the engine roars and the physics-defying stunts using vertical-shaped walls, a crowd looked on, gasped, and held its breath.
Meanwhile, there was also a snake charmer trying to escape a cobra’s venomous bite, a young woman rope-walking, and a knife-thrower showing his skills while being unfolded.
Directed by Hanumankind’s longtime friend and collaborator Bijoy Shetty, the music video has now gone viral for its fascinating and thrilling blend of Indian culture and the hip-hop genre.
In the wake of this, the internet is now having diverse reactions. For instance, an Instagram user with the handle @ravand_iii commented under DJ Akademiks’ repost of the music video claiming that Hanumankind copied the style of American rapper Project Pat.
“He stole Project Pat’s whole flow wtf,” the user wrote.
Several others joined in the conversation and continued with similar accusations regarding Project Pat.
Others lauded the video calling it “crazy” and “hard as hell,” adding that both the song’s beats and rhymes and the visuals from the music video were amazing.
A few defended Hanumankind and claimed that he may have been “inspired” by the likes of Project Pat rather than “stealing” his flow.
Hanumankind told Telly Chakkar on July 20, 2024, that he “feels great to be releasing music after a while.” He also explained how Big Dawgs was made at the start of 2024, “but it felt right to be the next release,” because of its energy, power, and grit.
“We wanted to create something that speaks to my journey and to that of all the others taking risks in life,” he added.
Notably, while dropping the music video on Instagram, he doubled down in the caption and wrote it was “for all the risk-takers putting it on the line for the life they live.” He also sent “big love to the incredible people that were involved in the project”, adding that he couldn’t have done it without all their efforts.
“Hands down one of the most intense experiences I’ve ever had,” he shared.
