As part of his ongoing YSL trial, Young Thug appeared in court once more on Wednesday, August 7, 2024. The trial went on while the court worked to get full proceedings back after the initial judge was removed.
Since May 9, 2022, Young Thug has been incarcerated following the filing of a 56-count indictment against him, Gunna, and more than two dozen other YSL members on charges of breaching the RICO Act. Commencing on November 27, 2023, the trial has already become the longest in Georgia's history.
However, during the August 7 trial, Young Thug was spotted sleeping in court. Once the photo of the nap went viral, people took to social media platforms like Instagram to react to the same.
Some even took to X to troll the rapper and make fun of the entire incident.
“When your annoying cousins come over so you and your brother fake sleep,” commented one user.
“Longest trail in history lmao,” said another X user.
“Bro probs had a hell of a night,” joked another user.
Other X users also shared similar things.
“Bro already knows he is coming home soon,” said one X user.
“He knows Trump is realising him after he wins,” wrote another user.
“Bro ready to get his 20 years started,” one X user commented.
Young Thug’s trial is still going on
On Wednesday, August 7, the prosecution and defense teams in Fulton County returned to the court to decide how the YSL RICO trial against Young Thug will move forward. The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) is a federal law targeting organized crime and racketeering.
It establishes new legal grounds for actions carried out as a component of an organized criminal enterprise and strengthens already-existing criminal penalties.
The trial resumed on Wednesday after Judge Paige Whitaker adjourned the trial on Tuesday, August 6, due to the unannounced arrival of Kenneth Copeland, a crucial prosecution witness.
The case is currently being handled by Whitaker, who decided on Tuesday that Copeland needed to testify again when the jury returned. Atlanta News First reported that Whitaker has been attempting to determine whether Assistant Chief District Attorney Adriane Love and/or Deputy District Attorney Simone Hylton broke the Brady rule by attending a secret meeting with Copeland and the former judge of the trial.
In an event that a Brady breach is found, the court can declare a mistrial or forbid the prosecution from introducing evidence that would be undermined by the material that was concealed. Whitaker, the rapper's trial's third judge since Ural Glanville was dismissed by Superior Court Judge Rachel Krause, now must decide on a course of action.
Additionally, Fox 5 Atlanta stated that Attorney Brian Steel informed Judge Whitaker that, that day, they had discovered new information on a mobile phone number and documents through a late discovery filed by the Fulton County District Attorney's Office.
Love first admitted to the judge that they had "inadvertently" omitted the material from the previous discovery. She did, however, acknowledge in court on Wednesday morning that they had suppressed the information because, at the time of the original evidence release, the person associated with the phone number had not been taken into custody.
The evidence seems to be related to the killing of Shymel Drinks and Demarco Boyer, the suspect. Drinks' killing is already an accusation against Damekion Garlington. Quamarvious Nichols and Shannon Stillwell, two other co-defendants of Young Thug, are also charged with Drinks' murder.
Meanwhile, amidst all of this, Young Thug was noted sleeping in court. Once the images of the particular incident went viral, fans took to X and Instagram to express their opinion about the same. They mostly joked about the matter.
The next trial date of Young Thug hasn’t been given as of yet.
