Recently, rappers Bad Bunny and Lil Baby made headlines as the latter outperformed the former in first-week sales. With his album WHAM, Baby debuted at the top of this week's Billboard 200. In its first week of release, which began on Friday, January 2, his latest album sold 140,000 equivalent album copies.
Meanwhile, Bad Bunny's DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS debuted at No. 2, with 122,000 equivalent album units sold. Since the tracking week for the Billboard chart runs from Friday to Thursday, Bunny's album, released on Sunday, January 5, only had five days of activity before debuting on the chart.
The news was shared on Instagram by Akademiks on January 13. Once the news went viral, netizens flooded the post's comment section to express their opinion. The reactions were mixed, as one Bad Bunny supporter pointed out that he once used to sell 300K in the first week. A netizen commented on the Instagram post:
Some netizens supported Bunny, with one pointing out that the rapper released his album on a Sunday, which contributed to the lower sales due to only having five days of activity. Another fan expressed disbelief and asked what happened to their beloved rapper.
Meanwhile, some netizens supported Baby, noting that despite facing alleged criticism, he still became number 1. Another fan said that the album was really cool and gave it an 8 out of 10.
Lil Baby topped the weekly chart with Bad Bunny following him
Lil Baby's most recent album, WHAM, achieved a total of 140,000 equivalent album units in its first week of release. This includes 90,000 streaming equivalent album units, which translates to 119.77 million on-demand streams of the tracks, along with 50,000 album sales and the remaining units from track equivalents.
After his previous hits, WHAM marks Lil Baby's fourth chart-topping album. He previously topped the charts with It's Only Me (2022), The Voice of the Heroes (with Lil Durk, 2021), and My Turn (2020). Additionally, WHAM is his eighth entry into the top 10.
On the other hand, DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS garnered a total of 8,000 album sales, 500 track equivalent album units, and 113,500 streaming equivalent album units. This was equivalent to 152.16 million on-demand streams of the tracks.
This marks Bunny's seventh top 10-charting album. Its success was further fueled by his well-known singles, such as EL CLúB and PIToRRO DE COCO, along with a few collaborations on the 17-track album.
There has always been a close contest between Lil Baby and Bad Bunny. Similar to Lil Baby, Bunny has also sent three of his albums to the top of the charts this decade. These include El Último Tour del Mundo (2020), Un Verano Sin Ti (2022), and Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana (2023).
As per Billboard's January 12 report, other entries on the chart included Kendrick Lamar at No. 3, Sabrina Carpenter at No. 4, and SZA at No. 5. The bottom half of this week's top ten features the Wicked movie soundtrack at No. 6, Billie Eilish at No. 7, Morgan Wallen at No. 8, Gracie Abrams at No. 9, and Tyler, the Creator, at No. 10.
Additionally, as reported by Hit Channel on January 13, fans can anticipate more projects from both rappers. Furthermore, both WHAM and DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS are expected to attract more streams after demonstrating their supremacy.
