After a short delay, the music video for Megan Thee Stallion's song Mamushi, starring Japanese rapper Yuki Chiba, was finally released on Friday, August 9. The singer has been teasing the video for a long time, which was shot in Japan.
The video also features Megan alongside actor Shô Kasamatsu, known for his roles in TV shows like Tokyo Vice and Gannibal. In the video, which also includes Yuki, Megan could be seen transforming into a mamushi, a venomous Japanese snake.
However, the video has received some backlash since its release. Many netizens took to Instagram to voice their opinions. Some criticized Megan for being “obsessed” with snakes, referencing her previous singles like Cobra, Hiss, and Boa. One netizen commented:
Several others expressed similar sentiments online.
On the other hand, some Instagram users said that the video is too demonic.
Megan Thee Stallion released music video for Mamushi, featuring Sho Kasamatsu
The latest music video for Megan Thee Stallion's song Mamushi (feat. Yuki Chiba) was released on August 9, 2024. Megan traveled to Japan for the video, casting actor Sho Kasamatsu in the prominent role.
In the clip, Yuki and Megan collaborated to showcase a plan for eliminating criminals in a Japanese spa. Megan changed into a mamushi, a deadly Japanese viper, and together with Yuki, they vanquished the villains.
She then created an army of blue-faced soldiers by using the spirits of the gangsters who had died.
The track also features Kasamatsu arriving at a deserted spa and using a card to enter a room full of women. In the next scene, Carter (Chris Tucker) and Lee (Jackie Chan) are seen enjoying themselves in the massage parlor.
Then Megan did the deed, slithering into the hot springs. After that, the bad guys were brainwashed into joining Megan's Blue Man Group army. However, when Kasamatsu woke up in the hot pool, it seemed that his time at the spa had come to an end.
For quite some time, Megan has been hinting about the video in various interviews. On July 25, the Grammy winner flaunted her collection of temporary back tattoos in a skin-baring grommet "fit" on Instagram. Her tattoo had many snakes entwining with flowers and clouds, which she captioned:
“I [love Japan].. I never want to leave.. MAMUSHI VIDEO SHOOT FINISHED.”
In an interview with Forbes 30 Under 30 on May 10, Megan discussed the snake references and her new song, Boa. She stated that her third studio album features a lot of snakes because "they're feared, misunderstood, [and] respected.”
She further shared:
“I was inspired to create this album about rebirth because I feel I am becoming a new person physically and mentally. I’ve always struggled to figure out how to be vulnerable and still make music that is going hard at the same time.”
Moreover, Mamushi has peaked in the Top 50 of the Billboard Hot 100 charts and has already earned over 150 million streams worldwide. In Japan, the song reached No. 1 on Spotify's Global Viral chart.
The premiere of the video comes after Megan was nominated for five MTV Video Music Awards, including Best Collaboration and Best Hip-Hop.
However, upon its release, netizens criticized the concept of the video for Megan’s “obsession with snakes” and the “demonic” vibe on the video.
Nevertheless, Megan Thee Stallion has not commented on the criticism.
