On Saturday, July 3, the rock band Aerosmith announced that they were retiring from touring due to their frontman Steven Tyler’s vocal cord injury. The musician's injury took place last year while he was performing with the band in September. The band was scheduled to tour across North America in 2024 and 2025. They have now canceled their remaining tour dates.
The Livin’ on the Edge and Love in an Elevator creators took to social media to tell fans that “it has been the honor of our lives to have our music become part of yours.”
“As you know. Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other. He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury. We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side. Sadly, it is clear, that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible," they further stated.
For those uninitiated, one can sustain a fractured larynx after a direct impact to the front of the neck, where the larynx or voice box is located. Fractures mostly occur during road traffic accidents and if one sustains injuries while involved in physical activity.

As per Sports Injury Clinic, symptoms of a fractured larynx include throat pain, a hoarse voice, shortness of breath, coughing blood, and throat swelling. A CT scan can confirm the injury. Treatment often involves a tracheostomy or other surgeries to repair the larynx, depending on the injury.
While Aerosmith updated fans about Steven Tyler's injury in 2023, they did not share much information about the same. They revealed that he had fractured his larynx and wrote on Facebook:
"Unfortunately, Steven’s vocal injury is more serious than initially thought. His doctor has confirmed that in addition to the damage to his vocal cords, he fractured his larynx which requires ongoing care."
Last year, Aerosmith also shared on Instagram that the singer’s injury caused bleeding. Steven Tyler spoke to People magazine about his injury in February 2024 and said:
“My throat’s been better, but it is on the mend. And out of all things, I’ve decided to take the advice not from my doctors, but from the girls at Janie’s House."
The 76-year-old singer was referring to the non-profit organization he created for girls who had experienced abuse and neglect.
Steven Tyler’s daughter, Mia, also confirmed with the magazine that he was not following his doctor’s orders. She said he was doing “much better,” however.
“He’s not supposed to be talking sometimes, so I have to literally yell at him and be like, ‘You can’t be on the phone with me right now, let’s just text',” she said.
In their latest statement to fans, Aerosmith mentioned:
“We are grateful beyond words for everyone who was pumped to get on the road with us one last time. Grateful to our expert crew, our incredible team and the thousands of talented people who’ve made our historic runs possible. A final thank you to you- the best fans on planet earth.”
As per The Hollywood Reporter, previously purchased tickets to the upcoming canceled shows will be refunded.
