Rapper Young Thug was released on house arrest after entering a non-negotiated guilty plea deal on Thursday, October 31, 2024. The singer has been sentenced to time served and 15 years of probation. This comes after the rapper was placed on arrest on racketeering and gang-related charges.

Prosecutors initially planned to recommend a sentence of 45 years that included 25 years in custody and 20 years on probation. However, Superior Court Judge Paige Whitaker chose the aforementioned punishment, which paved the way for his release.

Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Lamar Williams, pleaded guilty to one gang charge, two gun charges, and three drug charges. He also entered a no-contest plea after violating Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act and for leading a gang.

The 33-year-old had spent over 900 days behind bars since his May 2022 arrest, which spans nearly two and a half years. Prosecutors alleged that the musician’s Young Stoner Life Records, also known as Young Slime Life, was an organized crime syndicate responsible for “75 to 80% of violent crime” in Atlanta.

In court, Young Thug admitted "full responsibility" for his crimes before apologizing to "everybody that has got something to do with this situation."

“I take full responsibility for my crimes, for my charges… To really everybody that has got something to do with this situation, I want to say sorry.”

During his speech, Thug described himself as “a good guy with a good heart” who found himself “in a lot of stuff because I was just nice or cool.” The Grammy-winning artist added that he understood that one "couldn't be that way" after reaching a certain height because it wouldn't end well and "could fall on you."

More about the YSL RICO case as Young Thug gets released on house arrest

Prosecutors attempted to have Young Thug sentenced for being the proclaimed leader of the YSL gang that was involved in numerous crimes, including the alleged fatal shooting of a rival gang member in 2015. Prosecutors alleged that Thug rented a car that YSL members used in the shooting.

Apart from Young Thug, 27 other YSL Records associates, including Gunna, faced charges that included conspiring to violate the RICO Act. Prosecutors argued that the YSL gang took part in multiple felony offenses, including armed robbery, carjacking in Atlanta, and murder.

As the prosecutors attempted to build their case against Young Thug, the indictment was met with widespread outrage. This was because they attempted to use the rap lyrics of the YSL members as evidence of their alleged criminal intentions.

The trial, which is now being dubbed the longest trial in Georgia’s history, recorded multiple incidents.

This included Fulton County Superior Court Judge Ural Glanville being accused of holding an “improper” meeting on June 10 with prosecutors and a key witness. The latter was allegedly urged to testify by the judge, who has since denied the allegations.

Young Thug’s lead attorney Brian Steel also faced criminal contempt during the trial after he refused to reveal how he learned about the aforementioned meeting during the trial. At one point, the Fulton County deputy was arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle contraband for a defendant.

Judge Whitaker has now ordered Young Thug to serve 100 hours in community service and not get in touch with co-defendants and other gang members. He has also been banned from entering the metropolitan area of Atlanta for the first 10 years of the 15-year probation. He will be allowed to enter the restricted area on special exceptions.

Meanwhile, three other co-defendants of Williams have accepted their plea agreements this week from the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office.
